Do I what... I have this image that I designed... a phoenix and it's pretty much the personification of my heart and soul...
I've just recently started up a company here in sunny queensland, australia, and have a desire to create some business cards, stationary, a website etc... the usual adventure...

But I just can't seem to take that next step. I've been playing with some fire effects, actions, tutes... but it all seems a little corny.

The thing about my logo is that it *is* clean and simple... but I want it to come alive...

Hmph...

[any inspiration?]

-------------------------------

Just a thought - I may as well introduce myself...

best to know me as phoenix... everyone else seems to and as with most nicks - it suites

hello everyone

hey there.... welcome to the asylum...

Can you post a pic of this so we can all get a better understanding of where you are.... and perhaps, where you want to go with it?

Im in your same position. I just started a web design co. here in FL, Adept Designs. I am not one with much inspiration or many ideas, so I usually just play around until I find something I like, or just collaborate on several sites I like. I was planning on just starting with some simple business cards and flyers. With just my contact info, the company name, and a simple b/w graphic. Maybe if the company really gets going, then I'll get into something more intricate. *Y*A*W*N* I'm tired.

Don't try to do realistic effects. It will always come out looking cheesy. A nice, clean, simple, elegant card/identity would be (do it in illustrator) your pheonix design as line art, just black fills and maybe another color. Post up your logo so we can have a look. Once you've got it done get it letterpressed on nice paper. Fabriano or Sennelier. Don't make the logo bleed to the edges of the card, letterpressed this usually doesn't look great. Laserjet sometimes you can pull it off, but I've done and seen awesome letterpressed business cards. Stick with simple color combinations if you use more than one color at all. Red and black letterpressed on white paper is, well, classic and great.

here's an example I just did in about twenty minutes of the kinda design i'm talking about. if i was actually doing the design the ring would be much cleaner and the type would be hand kerned. but basically i did a rough pencil sketch. inked it real quick with a sharpie. went over it in illustrator and filled it with black and blue. added the type and viola. here's all the files i used except the original sketch. oh yeah if this wasn't an example for web i'd do the entire thing in illustrator, not the text as done in photoshoppe.

Cool stuff netmosis. Yeah, good clean design is very rarely seen and really underrated IMO. My cards actually a different direction, very photo-based but with a fairly modern/clean approach:
front
back

As far as inspiration, well, where have you guys looked? Design is all around us, and good design you just have to look harder for I love to just sit in Barnes & Noble and go thru their design books, sometimes i'll bring a sketchpad with me and do rough drawings of anything i see that interests me. There's a lot of letterhead/business card annuals out there that should shatter your idea of what a business card is supposed to look like

Fig, nice card. It is nice to see a photo card but only when done right, laser printed on glossy card stock. I've got the means to do really nice laser printed cards, I should try it out. Just gotta get good glossy stock that doesn't come in a 44 inch wide roll. I work for a graphics company so I always get design annuals for free. Definitely a great source of inspiration.

hi all
Netmosis - i really like card2...clean...simple and effective
Fig - lovely card - not often one sees b-cards like that - most are plain and white
These are logos I've created primarily cause i just love to (one of my pet loves actually)Logos. sometimes people take them, others don't. still dig it though.

later ya'all (always wanted to say that)
