I must admit I'm biased... but photoshop all the way

It's one of the most user-friendly, expandable, enjoyable packages out there...

It gives you a feeling of limitlessness... which is a lot to say when you're talking about computers...

I've used a lot of other packages... Corel - Paint Shop Pro etc... and none give me that same inspiration and freedom that I always find in Photoshop...

There are also a lot of tutes and stuff on the web for Photoshop - I guess 'cos a lot of people feel the way about it that I do

where to begin? right here. check out the link at the bottom of the page to both Hands On and the Gurus Network.

I have used all different kinds of graphics Programs, Id have to say that Photoshop with out a doubt is the best of the best. The people using Paintshop pro and all the other similar programs I believe would have Photoshop if they could afford it.

Thats just my opinion.

May i give my opinion?
~ejem~
I'm not a good graphic designer, i just make graphic designer, but i've worked with very good people down there in Vzla. I've seen that the bes program for the web is photoshop, at least is the most common, and it's not cheap! but i'v seen another program to "Paint", Corel Painter, before it was from another company (don't remember) but is very usefull to realy paint, ya know?, it has every kind of paint like Oleo, watercolor, and meny other, you can give pressure to the brush, you can add more water to the color, and treat it like a real paint.

In other way, Corel Draw has always problems with outputs, such as big printing...

Free Hand and illustrator are Vector programms, is harder to give any "picture effect" with these programs, but are exelent to draw....

That's my opinion!!!!!

Always purchase Adobe products, for they are the best kind, and I am not biased at all for any reason. *shifty eyes* Oh, and when I say purchase, I mean buy them... do not pirate them off the web. That is for hosers *quickly deleting Photoshop off home machine*

Draw a sketch pic? Of course it can! You might want a drawing tablet though, to make it easier.

Guess what everyone, my weekly rant is well overdue so It appears in the PS section this time?.

Well, I think your all getting a bit too tied down into what program's better to do what with. When the question being asked is:

Which is the best way to produce computer generated imagery.

Well, suffice to say, there isn't a solid answer. There are a thousand and one different programs out there that will aid you in your creative quests but there isn't really a right or wrong program to use (unless it's pirated, then it's the wrong program...). If you can't afford a decent gfx app, use GIMP for your 2D work (similar to PhotoShop) and Blender or Strata3D for your 3D work. All of those programs are 100% free! GIMP + Strata3D gives you as an artist an extremely powerful platform to work from, if these programs were around when I started out I never would have brought PS. (I still learning GIMP at the moment).

Some good examples of this can be see with Shane Caudle's work. He's worked for many different game companied and has done a lot of the 'cg' for Unreal and Unreal 2. Most of his computer illustrations and or artworks are done with Corel Painter (formerly known as MetaCreations Painter). On the other hand there's Dhabih's work which is mostly done in PhotoShop, you can't really say that one is better than the other as they have slightly different styles but the programs they use make no difference to their work. Their talent and success come from within, it doesn't come packaged with the program (unfortunately).

Yes, Painter is designed for digital illustration but many many people (including most of the local inhabitants) use PhotoShop for the same purpose. On the flip side I've seen some very nice eye candy web sites made with painter, it's all a matter of preference. The skill comes from the user, not the program.

All that being said, there are some top name apps that most of the pro's swear by. These being:

Adobe PhotoShop
Corel Painter
JASC Paint Shop Pro
GIMP (It's free! It's powerful! It's got a cool name!)

Yes, I did say Paint Shop Pro. Why? Cause I've seen some darn amazing images 'painted' with this app and they were better than almost anything I'll be capable of producing within the next year or so. It's just a tool, just like all the other tools. Once you learn how to use it you then apply your creativity and there really isn't any limit to what you can achieve. However, there are some apps your should adviod:

MS Paint.

Yep, that's about it.

As for 3D apps, that?s a whole other discussion, there are many different 3D apps geared towards many different uses. Das and a couble of others had a good discussion going about this some time back, I suggest you go read it.

If you work better drawing pencil sketches by hand then do so, scan them in and paint them up. If you try your hand at 3D modelling and that works out better for you then stick with it. If you want to do them all then please do, the more talent we have in this world the better. But always remember that most of what you see from the big shots in the business have been at it for years. Seriously, years, very few people have the ability to draw well, most people learn how to draw well. Most of the big name 3D artists can also draw extremely well. On the other hand, there are people like Weadah who claim they can't draw for s$%# with pencil and paper but with a tablet (even without a tablet) and a copy of PS would put most everyone here to shame.

Warping up my weekly rant, the Internet is an invaluable resource. Use it! There's boundless amounts of information just sitting there for the taking! You have to make your own path, after all, your the one who has to walk down it.

Drac.
