I just played around with the lightning tutorial over at the Gurus site. Pretty cool stuff, but I ran into one thing I couldn't get to work.

The tute said ... "Now, we want to remove the black areas around our lightning so we will be able to place it over or in between image layers. This is very simple: Just chage the mode of the layer containing the lightning from "Normal" to "Screen". The screen mode chages all dark areas to transparent. The darker it is, the less it is visible. Therefore, black just "disappears"."

Well, I changed the mode to screen and nothing happened. I turned off the black background and all just to make sure and nope, nothing on my lightning layer had changed. What am I missing here? Using PS 6.

yup it is. Only 2 layers, the background (solid black) and the "lightning" layer. I just followed the directions in the tute ...

Stupid Question on my behalf:
How will you know if the black you see is the black from the lightning layer or from the background since the background is black as well?

Oh good grief ... As I had mentioned before, I had turned off the background in order to see if anything had happened to the lightnining layer. Am I missing something really obvious and that is why folks are giving me those "you're an idiot" looks ...?

no, no, no, no, no.....
Those aren't "you're an idiot" looks, it's just that what you are describing leaves very little room for error.
It is so simple that I can't believe somethin went wrong...so nowhere to start but at the beginning.
Nothing complicated to screw up here...so it MUST be a simple thing.

Just for the sake of argument...fill a layer with nothing but bright red, and put it between the background and your 'screened' layer. See what happens.

ding ding ding ding!

Yup, everything worked out fine. I didn't realize that the black on the lightning layer would still be visible, I thought it would go away as if it had been deleted. Now I understand screen. Thanks for your patience folks. All is well in LaLa land ... Now to move on to another tute.

In the beginning, there was the word...and the word was 'God', although by the time it reached the other end of the phone line... the word was 'Gznd'
