Could this this be an action (i'm not sure) ...

1. [ctrl +] select a layer
2. gradient fill from <location a> to <location b> with <preset color> to <preset color>

I'm realy hoping that the action will remember the colors and the locations of the gradient drag.
How do I do this?

Oh, 1 more thing: are actions saved with a PSD file?

The actions do not get save with the psd it is just what the action does that is save with an psd.

If you want the action so you can pass it about or somethink look in the install foder of photoshop, so ps6 install foder would look like this:-

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 6.0\Presets\Photoshop Actions

your action should be there what ever you called it...

Actions are saved in ATN files. When you record an action, I think they are saved in a default.atn, but I'm not sure how it works. I do know that actions recorded persist between sessions. You can save Actions (ATN) to file for distribution.

Not sure how loading a transparency is recorded in an Action. Could load the active Layer, or look for a Layer with name...? I think it depends on how you record it (active record or insert menu item) and the modality of the action step. Probably the same for laying a gradient.

You've got me curious on this one...

An action will 'remember'...
...the pixel where the gradient started and the pixel where the gradient stopped.
...the type of gradient (ie. radial, linear, angle, etc)
...the gradient colors, IF you define them and save as a new gradient.

Defining a gradient is pretty easy.
1) Get out your gradient tool.
2) Go to your toolbox and, Click directly on the bar that shows the color of the present gradient, Click 'new', Set up 'your' gradient and then click save. Remember the name you gave it.

Use that gradient when recording you action and everything will work out just fine.

Almost forgot...No, Actions are not saved within the PSD file. They are saved in the application itself. That way you could perform the same Action on 753 (or more!) different images and get exactly the same result.
