Hi, I'm creating a gif image (using PS6) for my humble little page. There's one problem, though - my page has a dark background, and my gif file is sphere-shaped, with transparency around it. When I place the image on a white background, no problem, it seems normal. But, when I place it on a dark background, it gives me white strokes around the circle. I guess it's coming from the fading areas around the circle. Is there any way I can make the circle fade out smoothly in dark AND light background? Thanks in advance!

generally speaking it is not easy to create a trans gif for both a light and dark background. (esp if the edges defining the trans areas are soften/aliased).

Possible solution is to make 2 versions of the gif, one for the dark, and one for the light bg. Or perhaps make yourself a very accurate mask based on the transparency of the layers that constitute your image (i.e. Load the selction of eaach of the layers). create an alpha channel for the combined selections and tweak it.

thats about all I can say..

there are several different ways to achieve this, personally i would select the edge of the image and CONTRACT by 1px, and INVERT the selection and delete . this may or may not help you, depends on the resolution you created the image in.

or

Make 2 images:

1. First image: make a new layer under your pic, fill it with roughly the same background color as you have on the page it is to go on, select the layer the main image is one and ALT + click the layer, this should select the outline, MODIFY/EXPAND by 1 px, then COPY MERGED the selection and open a new page ( if you leave the settings as they are and just click ok, it will make the page the exact same size as the CACHED selection ) CTRL+V and you should have you image in the box with a 1px dark background, this will prevent the white edges appearing.

2. Use the origianl image as it seems fine on a light background

This seems long winded, but it is what i would do, as i am used to it, maybe others have a simpler method ?

EDIT <---- Damn vogon, too fast for me !!! LOL

'...fade out smoothly on both dark AND light?'

No.

You can make it work on both, but not if you want any level of smoothness. If you can tolerate a pixelated edge, yes.

Or, you could output it as a PNG-24 rather than gif and not have to worry about it (well, outside of your visitor having a browser that supports PNG files)...

OK, thanks guys. I guess my only option is to create some sorta dark-version and light-version. But, I really appreciate it Thank you so much!
