I was working with a downloaded jpeg today (don't remember the source)
when I tried to add text to it. The text tool defaulted to a tiny font size and refused
to take a value larger than 18 (not sure if it was points or pixels). A dialog
appeared saying value had to be between 1 and 18. I have never seen this dialog before.

I changed font to Arial, and then Times Roman...same problem, so i shut down Photoshop and
rebooted. Same problem with this particular file with tiny fonts but no more alerts.

I tried a new layer, I tried resizing without resampling, I tried saving as PSD., I tried different
fonts, points, pixels...i kept getting tiny font sizes.

I tried a new file. Text tool worked perfectly.

Then, I saved the original file to a gif and then the text tool worked perfectly.

This is the only file I have ever encountered with this problem.
Any ideas? Is the file corrupt? I'm just curious.

Photoshop 5.5, loads of memory, Win 98, 800 x 600 x 24b

Check the resolution.

Usually this happens with Bitmaps that are set to a resolution of 1px/inch instead of the standard screen res of 72 px/inch. The font size defaults to an unreadable level. Converting to 72 px res with the same pixel width and height should solve the problem for you.

If not, check with Bob's gremlins theory...and don't feed it after midnight.

While I haven't totally discounted that this might be due to poltergeists or gremlins,
I did take DarkGarden's advice and he was dead right. The res was set to 1.
Of course, this doesn't mean it wasn't a gremlin that set the res to 1 in the first place.

DarkGarden:
Thanks. I learned something new today.

Wow, a resolution of one pixel per inch... that's scary to think about! Photoshop 6 only allows a minimum of 2.457 pixels/inch...

It was neither....it was that thing that lives in the same room as your computer. I know, one of them live here.
If you look hard enough you can see them. You can only see them on your monitor...

.....just look here >>>>
