I am mamking a flash movie and doing all the graphics in photoshop 5. I made a piece of wood in photoshop now I need to make it look like it has been hit with a hammer very hard. Does anybody have any suggestion on how to do this? If someone would tell me how to put on picture inmy post I could show what the piece of wood I am useing looks like.

Displace filter then shade it all right and stuff.
If anyone wants to post the URL of the GN tut on displace that would be cool.
I'm too lazy to do it.

When wood breaks, it splits more than shatters.

Don't have much to say beyond that just yet.

And the UBB code ( for posting images and stuff ) is here.

There`s a link to it on the left side of the post text box.

Oh, and do you want dented wood or splintered wood ? Unless it`s a small piece of wood, you have to hit it REALLY hard to break it with a hammer. Or use a REALLY big hammer.

I would definitely make some acetoneperoxide, stuff it in some kind of a canister (those emty gunshells works fine), attach a shoelace soaked in a saturated solution of potassium nitrate as cord. Drill a hole in the wood, ignite, step back...shout FIRE IN THE HOOL. BANG! There you have some neat realistic splintered wood

To Nimraw => Nah, but very close! Didn't you know that Denmark has the greatest tax pressure in the entire world? A student like me pays about 42% in taxes! A dane who earns from ~93000 dollars a year most contribute 63-65% to the danish "welfare"!

Are you swedish? Hvis du er maa du kunne forsaa dette?

I was thinking some splintering with a dent in the middle. If I used a jagged selection line and a circular selection and got a good sized piece of the wood copyed. Then transformed it to look right. i think then if I used displace tool and added some shadow. would this make it look like it was hit with a medium sized hammer with only some splintering? Any ideas for making the wood look rough?

As for getting a picture on the web of what I am doing it seems to reqiur a web address for the picture and I don't think that I can get the image on a web page. But I do have access to a computer that has 24 hour internet access.

Why not? What seems to be the problem? It would be easier to use http rather than ftp (if this was your intension)

this is a method I learnt from DG way back yonder. Not sure if it is what your looking for? Perhaps your hammer was a different shape? ~Vp~

I tried one, too. With a little more effort, the splinters could look much more realistic.
Sorry, but I ran out of *awake* before I ran out of *details*...

If docilebob or vogonpoet could tell me a little on how to do what they did that would be appriciated. I would also be interested in how you did the blemishes/not holes on the wood. Would that be done by a burn tool?

In response to PunisherOlsen I have no web page that I can use. If you know where I could get one to use then I could post some pics which would be useful for this.

VP: niiiice. Made muh heart swell I tells ya

tj333: we went over the idea of "burnt" wood a long while back, but the same effect that VP just worked (expertly I might add) can come from the same sort of method (YMMV).

This thread http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Archives/Archive-000004/HTML/20010305-3-000962.html Holds two versions of tutorials to achieve the look. "Fast and didrty" they are, but they seem to work at times.

Hope it helps, and let us know what you manage to get from it

Peter

The reason I asked about the burn tool was not to make a burned pattern on the wood but if that tool was used in making the effect on the wood. But thanks for showing me that link it could be helpful latter.

tj: I wasn't referring to you mentioning the burn tool However (to actually answer this time), the burn tool can be used, but there are tons of methods to create depressions in surfaces. It all depends on the lighting. Remember that the raised edges opposite to the light direction will always be highlighted, and the edges on the same side as your light direction will shade. Comine that however you like...hehe.

That`s funny, HS. My first impression was * How fast was that squirrel going when it hit that tree? *

tj333 : I did that like this:
First, I made a eliptical selection, saved it as a channel.

Then.. on the channel.. FILTER>>STYLIZE>>EMBOSS. (you`ll have to play with the settings, depends on the size of your image)

Then FILTER>>GUASSIAN BLUR to soften the transition from light to dark,( 6px, 4 px, 2 px) then deselect, and gaussian blur at 1 or 2 pixels, to keep the jaggies at bay.

Then FILTER>>RENDER>>LIGHTING EFFECTS. I used a spot light from the upper left, ( again play around here til you like it) and set the texture channel to the alpha channel you just made.

Then I used the magic lasso the select individual grains, and used the dodge and burn tools for highlights and shadows, and the burn tool and airbrush for the knots and cracks.

If you have PS 6, the liquify tool makes great knots.

If you meant the wood itself, disregard this post. that`s a different deal. a few examples

Does that make sense ?

Thanks for the help everyone!! I have managed to make a fairly realistec piece of wood and have now added a hammer mark to it. Thinking of adding a few more now. Thanks for the help with this. When I can I will get a picture on the web for you to see. Thinking of getting a web page of my own to show off my work and such like.
