I've been trying out this little application called Snapz Pro (for Mac)
free demo for Mac http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/utilities/snapzpro/

It creates a video screen capture of the entire screen, a window or
a specified selected area.

I thought if anyone uses this or a similar app for the pc it might be
interesting to see how others here could demonstrate and share their approach to drawing
and painting or whatever.

It could also be used nicely for creating tutorials.

I'm not that familiar with Actions in PS....would it produce the same results
and save as a QTime movie?

Are there any other methods, which may produce similar results and create
smaller video files?

So far the major drawback that I can see using this method is that you have
to paint like a bat outta hell otherwise the file size is huge!

Anyhow I did a real quick sketch using the airbrush in PS if you want to have a peek.

You wouldn't really need to draw quickly as the video could always be played back faster. Besides, it's rather boring watching someone paint. Much better in fast forward! And the User could always freeze frame it if they wanted to loot a particular bits.

Real Media offers smaller file sizes as does Div-X

On a PC running windoze, Alt-Printscreen does a capture that can be reqorked in PS or Paint.

ooooh! This is cool. Anyone know of a good one for the PC? I've learnt a lot from watching these kinda video tutes... Loki n Muillins have a couple of them working PS from go to woe.

Personally Id want to get as much info in the vid as possible, then edit out the 'thinking time'.
Smaller files.. Div-X yah....tho these could be made into pretty wicked flash presentations too.

Allewyn : Print screen is useful only when you remember to press it, which will never be often enuf. heheh

Weadah, if you, and perhaps a few others, put together a CD with moving tuts complete with running commentary, I'ld pay $19.95 + S&H no prob. I might even to as high as $24.95 + S&H, but the CD would have to *full* to the brim.

It's been kicked around about GN seeing print, how about something like this? There has been a slightly growing trend along these lines. I might be a the next logical step or natural progression or something.

I think there are all kinds of possibilites...sound too!

Hey if you didn't want to go grand scale on the tutes, you could
burn separate demos on those mini CD's at 100 megs.

I remember loaning a 3DS MAX 2.5 book from my Uni library once and it came with a CD full of 1024x768 Video Tutes. There was one for each chapter and it worked through the whole chapter each time. Each Tute was about 5 to 10 min's long and there were about 30 or so chapters. That's a lot of Viedo! Espcially at that resolution, and there were no compression errors.

Although, I had to install a small app before I could view them I think the technology was created to do nothing but desktop app video tutes and desmostrations.....

However, I can't remember the name of it so I guess this post was completly pointless..... The Icon for the app was yellow, that help? heh....

If I've got some spare time I'll do some research into it later on tonight....

Oh man, the mind boggles, eh? Yeah, thanks for sharing that link. I've got basic, static screen caps down, but have been looking for something that will capture the cursor and pop out menus and such. This goes even beyond that. Hmmm. Hope there's no "elapsed time" feature - I can spend days on something!!! Heh.

Cool Mac trick:
You know command + shift + 3 captures the full screen.
Command + shift + 4 gives you a cross hair to define a specific part of the screen. But if you're trying to capture a dialog box or a window it's hard not to get background desktop junk in the capture. So ...

Command + shift + 4 + caps lock key down - click in the dialog or content window. Bingo. Just that window, nothing more or less. Maybe this isn't news, but I just learned it and it's very helpful!

There's a program called Snag-It for the PC that works very similarly Wead. Not sure off hand where you can get it, but that's the name, and it's pretty good.

Yea I find this very interesting, because I can't explain any think to do PS or any other programs I know in text form for some reason. It would be good to because people learn better if shown it personally than just a book, or text form tut.

Oh yea did some looking and found were you can get this Snag-itfrom.

Warjournal, Kroma : Wanted to say that I'm giving some thought to your ideas above, as theres no doubt 25 seconds of vid would beat any tute I?m likely to write, Or... not write, whatever hehe but I am making stuff all day so yah, is a good thing. A possible rent payer for GN Warjournal? Maybe. Good stuff anyways.

Check out the movie (.mov). Pretty good fire tut and he used Liquify to boot.

warjournal: thanks for that, that had some things I never know that you could do with photoshop (involing the Liquify tool and some other shortcut keys). This is a great way that tuts can go, but my only porblem I have is the time and space plus bandwith it can take to make one tut. It's a great way to learn as I said in my last post " I can't explain any think to do PS or any other programs I know in text form" and it's true I can't but let me show you and I think you would get what I mean.

So what goes form here is some of you guys going to make some video tuts or wait for more feed back on this topic?

Heh. I picked up a tip from that movie. New Lyaer, hold Alt, hold left mouse, select Layer > Merge Visible, release left mouse, and tada! I usually ctrl + a, ctrl + shift + c, ctrl +v, which I'll prolly stick to because that's what I'm used to doing.

That's what I do too Warjournal, and since it does not involve the mouse it is probably faster.

Video screen capture is available on PCs from a company called TechSmith.
The product name is Camtasia.
Also comes with a shitty little editing tool calles Producer. I just use Premiere....

I say that the editing tool sucks, cuz it does, but Camtasia is really great. I use it all the time for my job, creating demo and marketing CD-ROMs.
Anyway, enough talking.

I stand by this product absolutely. Really nice.
