I'm trying to use the Adobe Type Manager 4.1 to group types of fonts into groups, and be able to manage them a little more easily. I'm working with Photoshop 5.5.
I installed the program with no problems, but when I'm on the ATM screen, I can't seem to bring up the fonts that I have installed in my fonts folder. As far as I can see, I'm using only True Type fonts.
If there is any one out there that has any experience with this program, your input would sure be appreciated.

Are you using this on a Mac or PC? On my mac, I view the split screen with the user defined font groups on the left, and on the right are all the installed fonts. You can view either "Active Fonts", "Known Fonts", "System Fonts" (problably what you are viewing) or "Damaged Fonts". I say you are problably viewing the system fonts because that would explain why you only see true type and not all the installed fonts on your system.

jedart... thanks for the reply. I'm using a PC. I also view the split screen where all the installed fonts are on the right side. On the font groups (on the left), I can bring up "System Fonts"... which show the ttf,s that I have been using. They are in c:\windows\fonts. When I installed the ATM, it brought along with it post script fonts (.pfb and .pfm), which were installed into c:/Psfonts. I have no experience at all with Post Script Fonts. Can I use both ttf and pfb fonts together in the same folder? Could it be that PhotoShop is not pointed toward the psb fonts?

With atm it doesn't really matter where the fonts are stored as it takes over font management for the entire system, but you do have to tell atm where your fonts are (tt and ps can be together, but as a matter of good habit it's better to keep them seperate). I don't have atm on the machine I'm using now, so I'll try this from memory. To tell atm where your fonts are, or that you have new ones, there should be a suitcase icon in the lower right corner of the window, or go to "add fonts" under the file menu. That will add them to the "known fonts" list, now you can activate (or turn on) the font by double clicking on it. I'll check tomorrow to make sure this works for PC also.

i thought ATM was a waste of money. i found a program called font xplorer that worked very well. there's a demo for free (check downloads.com) and i don't think the full version is that much, but it works a whole lot better than type manager.

Hey guys, I really appreciate your help, but I've just about given up on trying to use this program.
One last queston: If I don't use a font management program, is there any way I can use the post script fonts that I have (as well as the true type fonts that I'm currently using) in Photoshop? I can't seem to find a way for Photoshop to recognize them.

Sorry Art99, I got to work today and went through atm on the pc and found it worked differently from what I told you last night.
Apparently atm will default to the atm directory for font locations whitch is problable not where you have them stored. While you in the "add fonts" tab, on the right hand side, choose "browse for fonts" and under that click on the "Adobe Type Manager" folder icon and browse to the folder where your ps fonts are. You should then see them load in the window on the right. Select the fonts you want to install into atm, I believe you can just drag them to the left window (known fonts). You activate the font by clicking in the check box on the left (double clicking opens a font preview window)
I hope that helps get you going. As far as installing them into Windows, if you have a lot of fonts, I would not recomend it, once you have a font management utility working it will be much easier to manage your fonts than installing/un-installing into Windows. If you are only using a few fonts, then I see no reason not to install directly into windows.
