Is there a way to turn a mal-formed selection into a square selection? An example of this would be... cntrl+click a Text Layer (you get the outline of each letter in your selection) then somehow transform this selection into a rectangular selection.

Thanks!

Not directly.

But, you can use guides to form a box from which to base the selection.

For best results -

1) make sure your rulers are visible (View >> Show Rulers...I think)

2) make sure 'snap to guides' under the View menu is checked.

3) make your selection.

4) drag horizontal and vertical guides until they snap into place on the edges of the selection.

5) Deselect, and make a selection with the rectangular marquee tool using the guides.

Well, yeah.

When you have a selection, laying guides will snap to it -- I believe the threshold is 50%, but don't quote me on that.

So, load your selection, drop some guides around it, de-select, then use the guides to make a rectanglar selection.

What DL said.

BLAH!!
