I give up. I've surfed for months and tried various things to try to make the torn paper edges like the front of the new Photoshop Down and Dirty Book. soooooo, it's time to swallow my pride and ask for help.

--I've tried tearing with the lasso and smudging out.
--I've tried tearing the edge and then masking and pixelate/crystalize at 3px.
--I've tried blending several areas together in various levels of transparency, and still haven't found the secret. Does anyone now how this was done?

Take your paper layer (it must be a solid color), and then run the brush strokes->spatter filter, play with the settings, and voila.

Thanks for the good suggestion. It makes an interesting effect, but still not quite what I'm aiming for.

I've played with it a little more. I duplicated the layer and shrank it just a little and lightly burning the midtones for 1px along the edges. Then by gradually dodging the edges of the original picture and applying a very light gaucassian blur...... I have almost exactly the image I was trying for. Thanx SOOOOO much for the guidance. I would never have thought of trying this technique.

well, check out http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum3/HTML/001890.html . Reilly did a good job here. but the torn paper effect can be achieved by:

1) try running the crystallize filter at a high setting (10) then several times at a low setting (2).

I'm surprised how real the effect looks. Kudos to Reilly for leading the way.

Cheers!

No problem, Dreamzstar. If possible, I'd love to see how the finished product came out.

For some more fun, run the spatter filter several times, then use the magic wand to select the color you used (this is why it's important for it to be a solid color), press ctrl-shift-i to invert the selection and ctrl-x to cut out the black portions. This should give a very raggedy edge similar to torn cloth.

Didn't Wangenstein create a series of parchment-style sigs?

If you get hold of him, you might pick up a few tricks.

I haven't tried to add something in as a pic before, so go easy on me... I found someone to host the pics for me. http://24.178.55.80/dream/tornParchment.jpg
and another try with a different method is: http://24.178.55.80/dream/tornPaper.gif

That deckle filter is definately the effect I'm aiming for, these haven't quite made it, but at least they're done by me. (a really sneaky way of saying I couldn't afford it anyway. *G*)
