So can anyone explain the use of the anti aliasing on type in PS6? I printed text out at 10pt and 50pt with none, crisp, strong and smooth versions and could see no significant difference between any of them

Printing text is a totally seperate issue.

A true type font, assuming the layer has been kept as a text layer, will print crisp and clear...it's a vector based item.

Render the layer, and try one anti-aliased and one not. Then you'll see the difference.

I myself am not at all clear on the purpose of the "antialias" check box in layer styles.

Vogonpoet did a find job of explaining what antialiasing is in general. But PS6 has the check box in some odd places - like the satin effect, the drop shadow, etc. I haven't looked into what this is all about. I mean, why would you ever *not* antialias a drop shadow? Makes me suspect there is something more to this, as it pertains to layer effects.

Anyone else know more about this?

I believe the Anti-Alias check box applies to the contour.

Say for example, you have some large type and want a contoured drop shadow that isn't the default 45 Degree drop off. And say you also wanted the size value of the shadow to be very small. This looks rather ugly like that. Checking the Anti-Alias box will sometimes fix the jaggies.

I'm fairly certain the Anti-Alias option only seems to appear after the Contour options. I haven't played with it much but it doesn't appear to do what you would initally assume it does. I think it's only there to fix some possible rendering bugs in the contour algorithms. Even then it doesn't really always work, often your still left with jaggies.

marf-> not in all cases. Some certain fonts for example must not be used with antialiasing. Furthermore certain effects could be done better without it aswell.. just play around with it a lill bit...

If I have a layer of a circle. is there a button or option that I can turn anti-aliasing on without going to Layer Styles?

Then how could you put anti-aliasing on before you draw a circle?? or you have to go through all the steps of drawing in a Channel and adjust> levels

You have to turn it on/off at the top of your screen (PS6). If you choose your Marqueetool, you are able to select wether you want to use it in antialias mode or not.
