I have a series of images that i need to convert to Black and White, problem is that some of them have shadows that i dont need and other background info i dont want, can anyone suggest a methos that would be best suited for the job ?

Image>Mode>Greyscale to convert to black and white in Photoshop but you already knew that I take it. perhaps you could show an example of the pictures to give us a better idea

Steve posted an excellant way of converting to B&W.

3) Adjustment Layer > HSV with Saturation all the way down
2) Adjustment Layer > Curves with tweaks once HSV is in place
1) Photo

Great method. I use it all the time to make custom brushes from photographs, but I also use a Levels or Threshold tossed on top.

Not sure about getting rid of background shadows. Could be as simple as Airbrushing, but might not.

The Stamp tool works good for removing objects from pictures. Just set the brush to copy from a clear space onto the shadows and when thats done just go over with the airbrush or dodge/darken to make it look right if needed.

yet another way is to select a single channel from the image... and then you can use levels or curves to tweak it from there.
