Preserved Topic: PHOTOSHOP cloning PLEASE HELP! (Page 1 of 1)

I urgently ned to alter some colours on a painting of mine that a magazine wants to print on its cover.
I ned to find out how to paint or clone in certain areas of the painting to another. Clone tool has this cross moving with it and what is cloned depends on where it moves. Can one set the cross to remain on a certain area for smling the clone? Is there a way to use/copy just a certain area and apply only this, like painting it on? Does the history brush do that? I can't figure this out, because history brush seems to only use the snapshot of whole pictures. Can I snalpsho only as particuluar area of a pic?
If naybody could please help me, the editor is waiting and it is a real chance for me, but I am an artist, and it is the first time I have used photoshop!

Can you please clarify your self and provide the picture so we can See exactly what you are talking about?

I'm not in front of my home computer right now, but if I remember correctly, there is an option for the Stamp(?) tool where the cross resets to its initial location each time you release the mouse button. Therefore, you might consider clicking around on the area you want painted with the Stamped material. Then you could perhaps Blur or Smudge the newly painted area until it looks right. Without a visual, its difficult to see what you're looking for.

I think you are looking for non-aligned. This is an option for the Stamp tool the keeps the clone source static.

Just surfed your website and I wanted to say how exellent your paintings were (haven't checked the scultptures yet!)

Unchecking the 'align' should do the trick for your cloning question. I often find it useful to clone onto a layer above your original, until satisfied, then merge if necessary. (if you do this make sure you check 'all layers' in the clone options)

If the area is extensive, the clone tool might be tedious. Can you select the section from the source image, copy and paste into the recieving image? That will automatically create a new layer which can be fine tuned with the erase tool or, even better, a layer mask.

And - if all you want is the *color*, not the texture or any other qualities - select the eyedropper tool and sample the source color. Switch to the art which needs to be modified. Select the paint brush or air brush, and set it's options to "color". Now painting will alter the color of whatever you paint over, but not it's texture or brightness.

well, if it happens to be rectangular,
you can select it, do a edit/define pattern
and then use the pattern brush ('below' the clone tool)
to paint with that pattern.

THANKS TO EVERYONE - AND THANKS FOR LIKING MY WORK! i HAVE TO CHANGE SOME AREAS IN THE PAINTING "WEIGHTLESS" (THE BLUE VERSION) ON MY SITE AS THEY DON'T WANT IT TOO MONOCHROME FOR THE COVER. SO I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SIMPLY PAINT WITH A CLONED AREA (NOT JUST THE COLOUR BUT A CLONE WITH TEXTURE AND EVERYTHING). i HAVE READ SO MUCH IN THE HELP i FEEL DIZZY - THEY OFTEN PRESUPPOSE KNOWLEGE BEGINNERS SIMPLY DON'T HAVE. iF THAT SILLY CROSS THAT KEEPS MOVING WHILE ONE IS STAMPING COULD JUST BE SET TO BE STUCK IN ONE AREA, THAT WOULD BE THE SOLUTION! i HAVE FIGURED OUT TO UNCLICK "ALIGNED" BUT THEN ONE CAN ONLY WORK WITH SHORT STROKES (BECAUSE YES, THE CROSS STARTS EVERY TIME AT THE SAME POINT, BUT THEN IT MOVES WITH ONES MOTION) WHICH MAKES ODD MARKS.
iF pHOTOSHOP CANT DO THIS IS THERE ANOTHER PROGRAMME? I HAVE A COUPLE OF DAYS EXTENSION BY THE EDITOR AND KNOW SOME GUYS WHERE I MICHT BE ABLE TO USE OTHER PROGRAMMES.

ok, I think I get what your asking.

Steve's suggestion souonds like the way to go imho. Try throwing a new layer above your painting, set the layers blend mode to 'color' and paint on that layer using a brush/colour of your choice (size, shape, opacity) and like Steve says, it should only colourise your image without destroying the brightness/texture/or details. (using new layer is so you don't destroy the original image data, you can delete the new layer, change its opacity etc)

::EDIT:: also try a 'curves adjustment layer' or even the 'sponge tool' set to 'saturate' or 'desaturate' to emphasize/de-emphasize areas of your paintings colour.
