Think about, reflections, refractions, transluency, lighting.
Create pipe shape. Use this as a template for adding shadows, highlights etc

::edit:: ok, me server is being slow, but here's my go at a glass pipe. The psd is below for you to see the layer stack/composition (darn server grrr)

 download .psd (186kb)

 thats my 0.25 rupees worth

check the .psd file (if the server is ok now) its all in the layers and layer blend modes.
Its just a combo of a base rectangle, reflected gradient (opacity down to nuttin), then layers of blurs of white/black for high/low lites.

Use the base reactangle to subtract from itself to get thinner selections , fill with white or black, reselect base rectangle, blur to taste, repeat , build it up in layers.

So now, the important part - rather than just saying "how'd he do that?" Go give it a try. If it doesn't work out, try some more. Do that for a few days, trying whatever works.
After that, come on back and ask some questions if you still have some.

Find an example of what you want (like say....VP's image....). Study what makes it look how it does. Try to duplicate it.

 Try some more.

That's the only way you're going to actually *learn* anything.

When you have an example, show it.

From what I remember! heh (use the .psd you DL'ed for reference for layer blend modes and opacities)ok.. we;re off

 1. New layer (base pipe shape)

Start with making a rectangular selection. Set your foreground/Background colours as lighter gray/darker gray. Add a reflective gradient, vertically starting in the middle of your selection. (Save this selection for later use/backup).

 2. New layer (center h/lite)

Fill with white, nudge the selection down around 10 pixels (or so), hit delete key, apply slight gaussian blur. Nudge the white down to the center of the pipe(change layer settings as per psd file).

 3. Copy layer ( blur low lite).

Invert layer (from white to black Ctrl+I), nudge down so the black is towards the lower part of your glass tube, reselect your big rectangle (ctrl click base pipe shape layer or load the saved selection - either). Now apply gaussian blur again, a bit more than last time (its a blurred low lite!). Again apply layer settings per psd

 4. Copy Center h/lite layer again (low lite).

Invert from white to black (ctrl +I) , nudge down a little and again gaussian it a bit but not as much as step 3. Apply layer settings per psd file.

 5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 for the high lites, only difference is your nudging up instead of down. Apply layer setting per psd file

 6. New layer (sharp h/lite)

Grab your pencil tool and draw a white line across the upper portion of your glass pipe. Maybe blur a tad. Apply layer settings etc blah blah lol

 7. Last but not least, new layer, but above your bg layer (drop shadow)

Reselect the base pipe shape, nudge the selection down mebbe 5-10 pxs, fill with black, reselect base selection and hit delete key. Gassian blur and apply layer settings per psd

**Important** Experiment. This is how I did it but its not definitive. Play around and mess with layer blend modes and opacities. The settings I used work well for the bg I used but will not be the same for different types of backgrounds. Try adding more layers of diffferent highs/low lites etc.. fun

 Good luck
