wj: I think I get more tired of asking myself that question. To be honest I DO work in graphics. I freelance logo design, illustration, and all sectors of graphic design. It is a living, but yeah, I often wonder about working for a nice design firm...but sans that piece of paper from anyone saying it's what I took in school, it gets tough

Also, I enjoy bouncing, so it's something I'd do regardless. It's not my "main" job now, so I'd not stop.

vogon et al.: I'm glad people are enjoying this. It's really fast and dirty. If people spend a good deal of time with the techniques, creating brushes, using colour blocking etc. then they can make phenomenal pieces.

I really do want to see what comes from this, especially from you Dave. Your work has been really impressing me.

Overall I am fairly happy with the concept DG and have grasp of whats needed, however, I need too spend alot more time on the details. I am going to keep working on this though. I find myself using the smudge tool alot at a medium pressure, which isnt mentioned. Is smudging a valid tool for this ?

One thing I havent had the guts to do yet, is give up on the use of multiple layers. I am too worried to make one mistake that destroys a lot of hard work ! heh

Things I am not satisfied with:

1. eyebrow, bad shape, needs to blend in better

2. general shape of the skin area and eye lids

3. lack of details/texture (I cheated here by slapping on a layer of gray noise, low opacity)

........still working.......... ~Vp~

You sound like my wife, DG. She loves cooking, but she wants to do it on her own terms. Which is good for me, because if she had a job cooking, she wouldn't do it when she got home.

One of these days I'll show more of what I've been up to along these lines. I don't get the bug too often, so my progress is a bit slow. That Washu pic is one I've been playing with lately, but that one is one of the older versions.

Brushes! I keep forgetting about Faux Finish and Natural brushes. Not the greatest, but they'll do since I'm too lazy to make my own. Or maybe I'll just load them in and leave 'em there. One of these days. One of these days.

I'm done rambling.

um... I think you should start over. Spend a lot of time on the eyeball itself. Just paint it, no lens flare, no filter. Then notice that the eyelids never are open that wide. Look at some eyes (fotos) and work from them.

I will make one when I finish my history paper I should be workin on... bleck.

Insider: Follow Izzy's advice. Filters are unnecessary, especially since we're talking about painting. Sharpen your brushes, less soft edges. Redraw your iris. The lighting effects, lens flare, amd general "rock disk" feel is really screwing with the look.

You're going in the right direction though. Keep it up.

VP: Brilliant. I love the texture of the eyebrow. Yes there are problems, but I think you're adressing them a bit.

Skin texture is tough. The layer of noise looks okee, but it's a bit much. Try working on a single layer for your next version. Little mistakes can be undone in the history menu, so be less self conscious. Remember, hard brushes to define the areas of changing tone, then soft brushes to blend.

Using the smudge tool is perfectly acceptable. HOWEVER (heh) I think you're going to really love using it if you change to a more natural brush (dispersals at the edges, spatter-ish) and set the spacing to different amounts. What this will do, is still give you blends, but they won't be as smooth and flat. Essentially you'll be creating texture with your blends.

With that said, don't depend too much on the smudge tool. Try making minor blends with softer brushes, or more disperse brushes. Also learn to see where those blends aren't necessary. Tricking the eye by making hard colour blocks seem to fit next to each other is a great skill. Overuse of the smudge tool will bring about that bad "clay" look that I'd mentioned. It's almost as noticeable as using too much dodge and burn tooling (which is a no no for this exercise)

Your colours are sound, but a bit drab right now. I think with this it actually works. Keep in mind that the iris area of the eye has depth and colour variation.

The iris is a bit flat, and lacks colour. The eye may appear white in your mind, but it has tone and shade in reality. The shading itself isn't bad at all, but again, a bit too flat and uniform.

FEEL FREE TO FUCK UP!

It's a wonderful thing to see those little mistakes work into beautiful randomness

It might seem like I'm being harsh, but that's only to help with the flaws, as the image itself looks really good. This is miles beyond what we saw when you first touched a tablet at home. Great work!

Let's see more!

I just thought I'd grab that point and say it again, too many people feel that all they do needs to be correct all the time. You don't learn anything until you screw up! Have fun, relax.

I'm working hard on trying to figure out where a "digital painting" forum might fit, we need one, we *all* need something like this! Peter, you're my hero.

Bugger! I'm thinking It's not working for me!!

Well I think that I should tell you what I did anyway.

I used the complamentary colour to work the shadows, that means that on the shadow side we use greens for skin tone, this gives a much more 'real' look, I also sharpened the tips of the eye brow hair and added eyelashes, followoing the tips to have less opacity, and thaking care with the light direction.

I also added a crease in the top eyelid. I have to say That I LOVE the idea of using the textured brushes, the skin texture is exciting.

Thaks for the fun.

Bugger I lost my first try, so these posts are in revese order.

I played with the realistic eye of DG's.

I used a complamentary coulour for the shadows on the skin. That means I used green (as it is the complamentary of pink/red/skintone)made sure that I redced the opacity a fair bit. I paid particular attention to adding this to the darkest shadow areas.....in the crease of the eye and along the edge of the lid where it touches the eye ball.

I sharpened the tips of that hair in the brow.

I added a deeper crease to the top lid, using some great textured brushes (thanks for that tip!!!!!)

I had great fun, a great way to pass the time when I have urgent jobs to do.

mayb

PS. I'm having great difficulty posting the image that i have played with.

DG - no need for me to comment on your work, you've heard it already

But - the issue I'm here for: Gurus Network. We could relly use such a tutorial. It wouldn't take much to format what you've done here for the GN. What'dya say?

It would do the world a favor, and not many people could present it or explain it as well as you have.

eh?

A question struck me as I was working on DG's pseudo-tut (it's not a 'real' tut until he puts it up at GN ):

How many of you use drawing pads/tablets when you're working on this sort of thing? Am I the only one using a mouse, much less a trackball? (Not that that's why my first attempt at an eye came out horribly misshapen. Practice makes a little less imperfect, after all...)

Wang: Strangely enough, those eyes you see near the beginning of the thread, all done with a logitech "trackman marble" trackball.

I wasn't using a tablet until January of this year.

It's not the tools that make the art, so don't feel inadequate in that department. Keep honing and practicing with meager tools, and when you expand, you'll be all the better for it.

Up until January, all my work was produced with that lovely little trackball. I still use it a lot while painting and designing, for small things, and old habits.

Ok now to come clean....

The soul purpose for me to actually start this thread was to make a sig with eyes... After taking the time to learn how to do fire with mahjqa and watching queen of the damned (leaving out the fact that I have always adored to handraw and paint eyes, rendering them was just as fun) I wanted to make a sig that had flaming eyes.... Flames just in the pupil... And in a little while I may try that but as of now I kind of like what I have come up with and I would like to thank DG and the asylum for helping me with my airbrushing skills... Oh yea and I too have a regular mouse not some fancy drawing pad..... So here is my rendered version of 2 eyes..... Maybe someday flaming.....

Any comments or suggestions before I put this in sig forum?

They are watching. Always watching.

And of course my current sig below.....

DG: I second (or third) DL - as is clear from the reaction here it is one of those inspirational tutorials that has people starting PS before they've even reached then end of the explanation (like mahjqa's animated fire threads!!). You've really done all the hard work above.

InSiDeR: Comments. OK I'm no artist but: The red eye is OK but by mirroring it you've made the lighting look very odd indeed. Also just having an identical but mirrored eye would look peculiar anyway even without the lighting (unless you were going for that look with say a robot's eyes). My advice would be to start the second eye from scratch so that the lighting looks consistent and you also get little differences sneaking in which will help give it a more realistic look.
