I have a digital pic I took at the Olympic games. The camera had something on the lens at the time and I'm looking for some guidance on how to clean it up. You will see the bluries on lower left. I have 5.5 and not proficient at using it.

Hi, Uncle Buck. Nice to meet you.

Sorry, but you`re hosed.

Well, ok, it may not be as dark as all that. But there`s gonna be a LOT of hand work involved. How badly do you want to save this pic?
Only way I can see is to zoom way in, and clone stamp where you can and paint where you can`t. Where you have to paint, keep the colrs varied , like the clear parts of the pic. Zoom in to about 600-800% and you`ll see what I mean.

If this is the way you want to go, be glad to help if you get stuck.

Thanks Docile. The stamp is what I've been playing around with. Let's just say it's geting there. Sloooowly. I actually have another that I want to keep too so I may be 1/2 way decent at doing this when I'm done. Was just hoping there was a quicker, easier way.
I'll post the before/after results later.

yeah, the problem is that the area is 'blurred' rather than discoloured. If the detail was there but it was discoloured, it could be easier to touch it up, but it having lost detail in that area, then your gonna have your work cut out for you.

Check the individual (rgb) channels, to see if there is anything contained in those that might help. Maybe.

Otherwise, as DB rightly says, its gonna be a case of softly cloning/painting back in the details. Maybe 'crop' the photo a little depending on what the subject of the photo is.

Would like to see how you get on Uncle Buck

I would try painting over the spotted places and using layer blends and diff colors to get it all to even out.

mmm... yah... pretty much what DB said.
Paint brush/airbrush/clone/...
Yep... zoomin' too. had one window zoomed at about 1200% with another window at 100% to see changes.
Mmm.. used mah lasso. Did some >Image>Adjust>everything.
And a little bit o' creativity in there too.
Varied colours in painted areas, as DB said as well.
So ya... hand work... gotta have it.

---> clicky <---

Like DB mentioned... need help?.. say so.
Here or on ICQ... whatever.

Cheers man.

hmmm, might also be worth removing the shadow from guy no.3's face - I find that distracting

Yeah, well if you're going to go that far, why not give #2 guy a face!

Very nice work Michael. I'm doubtful my work will reach that level. What's with the lasso?
And how do you use 2 windows and update one? I can't open the image twice. I have a dual monitor work station and would love to take advantage of my screen space.
I'm finding this to be hard on the eyeballs and think the boots will be the toughie.
Due to my limited expertise the face will remain hidden and the shadow, well, it will probably remain also.

Also I'm working with a mouse. I have a Summagraphics tablet. Could I use it with the pen?

Thanks, UB

Edit: Never mind about the 2nd window. I got it. Neat-o!!

You could have also easily fixed those blotches with Adjustement Layers. No hand work needed with those.

I must say I think "easily" fixing those with adjustment layers is a bit of a strong word.

Michael - very nice work

This type of work is not generally easy and is very rarely acheived without working as DB and michael described.

Yes, sorry, I did use "easily" a bit too harshly. But it is quite possible - I took the picture and played around for about 10 mins with the various kinds of Adjustement Layers and 2 radial gradiants to cover the blotches, and I was seeing obvious progress, but it wouldn't be possible to do with *just* radial gradiants, there would be some hand work involved (lassoing areas), so I retract my previous statement. What I should have said is fixing that image doesn't necessarily take alot of hard work.

If you all play around with Adjustment layers you'll see what I mean.

BTW, I don't normally use adjustement layers, I would have done it the same way Michael did because I feel more comfortable doing it that way

One of those spots can be easily fixed with Curves Adjustment and a circular gradient. After 5 mins of fiddling I came awfully damn close.

The other spot is a bit too far gone for an Adjustment layer. Too much detail is washed out.

Ok Ok...I'm back. Hard to get much done on a 1/2 hour lunch at work.
Been workin' mostly on the shadows and am getting read to hit the boots or some more on the sleigh.
I think I'm gonna need some guideance on the boots tho. Any input up to this point? I'm not going to try to make it perfect but just good and presentable at the viewing size.

This is not something I want to do for a living and I learned quickly that a mouse sucks bigtime.
Thanks, UB

It looks to me that ya would just need to darken the boots a little. Notice the toes of the other boots are slightly lighter than the rest of the boot... keep that in mind. I would paint over them with a dark gray, and try different blend modes.
