Preserved Topic: Twitch miscminutiae background

What I am wondering here is how you went about making your background image. I have visited the site many times since you have done the redesign and I have really been wondering what the creative process was that went into you making the site.

I find it to be appeasing in many different ways. I really like the color sceme and the graphics. The design is suttle and bold in how it encompases many different graphical components. Now that my nose is brown.

What went into creating this. Where did you get your ideas, and how did you go about implementing them.

I'm positively flattered that you have chosen to ask such questions and say such things. The design was never one that I've been 100% proud of, but I will say I have enjoyed the usage, and the design is simple enough that I can't be 100% upset with it at any given time.

The process was relatively simple. In my mind, I pictured these old, industrial drawings. I think my initial inspiration was a collection of old Communist propaganda posters that I came across several weeks before this design went live. It was meant to be dirty, while still maintaining that air of completion.

The drawings themselves were the most difficult part of it all. The color scheme came naturally to me when I was thinking of aged, weathered Communist posters. Light yellows, dingy whites, you know the drill. The drawings... Well, I wanted to incorporate myself into the design as well, which was an integral step, as it was to be a personal site. So, I chose drawings (and worked them into a state of dinginess) that reflected a constant state of "building," while at the same time idealizing "movement."

As you can see in the top-left image, I incorporated my face into a sketch done of a simple, late 1800s-era machine that did the work of stamping something. I couldn't tell you exactly what the purpose was of it, in all honesty. However, the "motion" of that sketch was enough to convince me that it was the right one to choose.

As we glimpse down in the bottom-right corner, you'll see a very old Victrolia sketch. This was a double-purpose: One, to imply the action of speaking, and the other to emphasize the motion of the bell--to go elsewhere (links at are the top, you see).
