Preserved Topic: How small can your icons go? (Page 1 of 1)

So I'm working on a new interface and I need 3 icons: Contact, Help, and Printer-Friendly. Contact and help are easy to make small, but I'm having trouble with the printer. I was able to make a reasonable printer in 18x14, but I wish it could go smaller. There will be rollovers that pop up the actual words so it does not need to be completely obvious.

Can you guys think of any simple concepts for printer-friendly that might make a small icon?

How about just a sheet of paper folding up and over, as though from the top of a printer? The idea of 'paper' should communicate enough for most people to see that it involves a printer somehow.

Sounds like somebody is skinning a forum to me Wangenstein gave you some good advice. Go with paper. Most people with *some* common sense will be able to figure it out

How about 10x15?

It's just a hacked up version of the IE print icon, if you can deal with that then yeah, you can use it.

Doesn't look as good on a dark background, but I will be using it on a light background.

But that is one small icon! Not bad...I would also like to know what it is to be used for, my curiosity has been piqued...

Well, that may be a bit excessive. The reason is because it is going in a liquid interface that has both a limited height, and a variable title so I want to leave as much room as possible. These icons are just meant to be located in a handy place so people can get to them quickly. For accessibility purposes the links will also be listed in the footer of each page in text format. (Also, the interface won't even appear in non-graphical browsers).

Jestah: Is right - there are definite usability issues about having such tiny targets. Why not go the whole hog and have single pixels with ALT and TITLE to provide tool tips about what is going on? That said Dracusis' effort is very good and although your version might look OK on a light background it is far from clear here. I think we'd all be interested to see how it all works together if you want to throw the link our way when you are done (it might all work nicely in context).
