Gurusnetwork is always a good start.

Check out Steve's

Does it get better than this?

The slop-meister speaks from the trenches. There are no "right" answers. It *is* helpful to have a bag of tricks to reach into though. The basic trick is an alpha channel derived from the image itself. After that it's experience and sweat.
How do you gain experience?

Play.
Fiddle.
Learn.

And of course:
Swear.
Kick the Dog.
Terrorize your family.
Throw heavy objects.

Prevail.
