Hello and thanx for your time.

I have created a new layer with just text and I cannot find a way to activate the centring icons on my tool bar , they are greyed out????

Well, you've got me confused. When you edit the text layer there should be three buttons: left justified, center, right justified. At least I think that's how it goes. Anyway, the buttons should be there in the same dialogue box where you edit the text. I can't image why they would be greyed out (and not sure what you mean by "toolbar"--there are no centering icons on the toolbar...).

What version of Adobe Photoshop are you using? The location of the button may vary from version to version.

If I understand what you want, with the text layer active, Select All ( CTRL+A ) Layer>>Align to Selection>>Horizontal Center..Repeat for Vertical Center.
