Hello,
I'm trying to figure out how to have multiple layers of fonts clip through (maybe?) to a color layer. I would use this single color layer to control the color (duhh) of the font layers.
I've tried the ALT+ click between layers... but this creates a clip between each of the layers... not between each of the font layers and a single color layer...
Any help would be appreciated.

Clip? What's a clip?

Isn't a clip the results of clicking between layers, the top layer clicks through to the bottom layer? The bottom layer becomes the clip?
Oh geez... sorry if I screwed that up.

Between layers? I can click on a layer. I can click the layers above and below any given layer but clicking in between them doesn't do anything.

Now, you mentioned ALT + clicking on the layers yes? Well, that will select the alpha mask of the layer you click on but I can't see how that would "Clip" anything? Are you talking about masking out certain areas of a layer? Are you using layer adjustments or specific layer masks?

The only time the word "clip" is used in relation to Photoshop is when your using Clipping Paths for print work. Please try and find the correct word to use because I have no idea what your talking about.

What Karl is talking about is grouping layers. This is done with [layer>group with previous] and [layer>ungroup] and has the effect that the 'top' layer is only visible where the 'bottom' layer exists. You can also do this by holding CTRL-SHIFT-ALT and clicking between the layers. It's a little difficult to understand, but when you try you'll get it.

On to the problem; as far as I know it's not possible to group a layer to two layers at once. the things you can do is to merge the 'bottom' layer, or duplicate the 'top' layer and use them for both the 'bottom' layers.

The confusement here is propably because of the term 'clipping path', which is used to create a mask with a vector shape, to add transparency to a layer. Often used in printing.

Hmmm...
I will play around with grouping layers.

This is a possible workaround:
CTRL+CLICK all text layers so you end up with a multiple selection, then add a new layer above your text layers, and create a new solid color layer (the selection becomes the mask).
This is a sketchy solution at best, once I move my original text, I'll need to recreate my mask for my solid filled color layer.

Any other ideas?

Inmates!

I'm surprised there isn't a solution to the problem, that is a single layer which effects a group of underlying font layers.

Someone please confirm this fact.

I know Mask well. However, lets say you have 20 layers in your drawing: layers 8,9,10 are different font layers - I would like layer 11 to control the color of these font layers.

I'm off to expirement with your suggestions.

Err....
Either I'm not explaining myself well, or the solution is slapping me upside the head and I aint feeling it.
Yes, I know masks....

All right, I'm just going to upload a small example PSD... <hold on>

The thing you could do (assuming all the text has to be in the same color) is moving all your text layers into a folder (supported by PS 6.0 and up), and setting the blending mode of the folder to 'normal' (NOT see-through) and adding a hue/saturation layer in that folder, on top. This way, the hue/saturation layer affects onlythe contents of the map (namely, the text layers) ,and nothing else.
