Burst of Light is a good start.

You might want to toss Find Edges/Invert in there somewhere.

Now that's odd.
I fixed your link and it comes back to this thread.
However, cut-n-paste works just fine.
What trickery is this?

Oh my God, Raptor. That's the hardest I've laughed in a while.

As for the graphic, stud, it kind of looks like the light is shining out from the text itself, rather than from behind it... is that what you wanted.

The "ray of light" technique I use involves noise and radial blur... most probably better explained by those tutorials.

One thing nearly all of these tutorials have in common is the use of polar coords. Definitely a useful tool that you should get comfortable with (there's a GREAT tutorial on it @ http://www.gurusnetwork.com). This is a tutorial written in french (translated below). Although it's not quite the same rays of light that you're pursuing, it does explain some of the basics in getting this kind of effect.

1. New document. 425 x 425, transparent background. Fill with white. Filter -> Noise -> Add Noise. Settings: 15, Uniform, Monochromatic.

2. Image -> Adjust -> Threshold. What's threshold do? Research it yourself. There's a small explanation here that should give you an idea. Settings: 219.

3. Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur. Settings: 90°, 400. Image -> Adjust -> Invert (CTRL+I).

4. This was tough, I don't speak french!!! >.< Although I didn't do it the way they did, it works just as well. Double click your layer. We're going to add a gradient overlay. Match the settings seen here:

Then make a new layer above it. Link those two layers together (see the little box next to the visibility icon? Click it.). Now Layer -> Merge Linked (CTRL+E).

5. Filter -> Distort -> Polar Coordinates. Settings: Rectangular to Polar.

6. Image -> Adjust -> Hue and Saturation. Colorize checked, Hue: 38; Saturation: 62; Luminosity: 0.

7. New layer. Default colors (hit 'D' on your keyboard). Filter -> Render -> Clouds. Set the layer blend mode to color dodge. Now Filter -> Render -> Difference Clouds until you find something you like.

8. Filter -> Noise -> Add Noise. Settings: 11, Gaussian, Monochromatic.

Man, ray, that's gonna get really old soon, if it hasn't already.

But don't worry. We still find it highly amusing and will most likely do so till the end of time.

Actually, I find it very flattering...what started long ago, has become...somewhat well-known, now...
