I did
Actually i first learned gimp and then PS
I recommend Grokking the Gimp for starting...
It's more powerfull than it looks at first, it's scriptable, it has some interesting features that PS lack, such as saving a picture as c code and it's free source And free
Just install gnome under red hat or slackware, at least that's what i tried.

yep, I use GIMP. I love it. After I got used to doing a few things, it is a lot like PS. I love it. It has this really cool filter called "IWarp". Very nifty.

I didn't know however, that it will read PSD files. That is really cool!

I do believe that getting a Wacom to work on some distros is a little difficult though.

Oh yeah, it came with my Mandrake 9.0 distro.

I've got GIMP installed and have used it from time to time. I like it... it's easy to use. it does have the LINUX (or even old AMIGA) feel to it. Kinda like working in DreamWeaver4. No real shell of an application. It's not the most stable thing in the world... but it is running in windows (which I believe will crash all by itself if you give it enough time). I won't unistall it because I like trying things in new environments. Another app that falls into this category for me is Project Dogwaffle. Anyone ever use this one?

I use gimp at home, so anything I do for fun I use Gimp. At work I use photoshop. I have found gimp to be a very impressive program, I does much of the stuff I need, however, it is very different from PS, for instance last night I had trouble getting gimp 1.3 to give me a 1 px brush to work with.

The wip I just placed up was worked on with the Gimp, its pretty cool. I definately reccomend trying it out. It will take some time to get used to, because it is not PS, but it does do almost everything PS does in one way or another.

Oh yeah, and I still can't get my Wacom to work with FreeBSD.

I use GIMP too. Powerfull and free! What more could you want?

The only let down for me is the interface -- I Just don't find it very productive. That and my brain is hard wired with PS shortcuts. Still, it's fun to play in every now and then. Sometimes using a different app can help me break out of those un-creative ruts I often work myself into while staring at the PS interface.

You know, the one thing that I still can't do very well in GIMP is slicing up an image.

Just recently I found out how to do the equivalent to "Select Trancparancy"

I played with Gimp for Win a long time ago.
My only complaint is that Script-Fu kept crashing it.
But I hear it's more stable now.

I've been using GIMP now for a couple of months and I really like it. I changed from PS when I switched to Linux, and so far I've been able to do everything I once did (which wasn't much ) on ps on gimp as well. Took some time getting used to the new layout and shortcuts in the beginning...

Yeah, I've used it, and it seems to have alot of cool features. I have two real complaints about it:

1. I don't like the navigation.

2. I doesn't export .gif's unless you get direct permission from unisys to use the lzw compression.
gotta have that licence.

other than that, it seems pretty good.

I don't know why you say it doesn't export GIF file format. It doesn't let you do per say, but if you attach .gif to the end of your file and save it (by extension) it will save as a .gif.

The WIP above is a gif created by GIMP without me getting specific permission.

Well since some of you guys use both PS and GIMP, let me as a question here.

In PS, you can drag the guide lines to "Snap to Grid" This way you get the center of an image. Right? Right. How does one do that in GIMP?

By the way, any of you guys that use GIMP would mind adding me to your ICQ I would greatly appreciate it. I won't bug you (much )

I had a peep of it on my friends machine. It wasnt the latest version. What ever the version was it was similar to PS 4 I thought. Also because its Linux running xWindows its shit slow. It was on a 266 too which didnt help.
