To start off with, the metal looks very filtered, like you just did a noise/motion blur effect and stuck slapped on something that said ozone...It's not too original, and it needs some serious work.

Yeah, I know it needs work, that's why I asked for suggestions. Plus I've only had photoshop like, a day, so don't expect it to be perfect.

he didnt expect it to be perfect. he just picking things out that it seems wrong with.
looks like oyu went for the brushed metal look. its a little too jagged though. try making the brushyness look more smooth

my suggestions:

go to handsOn, and do all the tutorials.

go to gurus network, and do all the photoshop tutorials.

then come back, and try again. who knows? maybe you'll develop your own technique for this image - or maybe you'll still throw a few filters together. but hopefully, somewhere along the way, you'll learn something.

for links, look down.

Or just type "Photoshop Tutorials" into Google.

Sorry about coming off a little harsh, didn't mean too, I was just pointing out things that needed work.

Yup, what Reitsma said.

it's all fine and good that you've only had PS for a day, but try putting a bit more effort into learning and creating before posting it all for critique.

maybe add a "rust" effect to it. Once you get the metal looking a little less harsh.

Ok, I was just fooling around and I came up with this. http://spritershaven.homestead.com/files/gold_stamp.gif I think it is slightly better, but I won't post anymore of these until I break into Photoshop more, developing my skills. I guess I won't ask for any c + c on this one since I use pretty much the saem method as the previous one.

heck, mr x,
it's already looking a lot better.

..of course, the fact remains that gold is rarely ever 'brushed', it is usually polished.
...and if it is brushed, it would be with brush marks, not deep scratches or grooves, which is what it looks like now.

fact remains, it seems you're improving, so keep it up at this pace, and i can't wait to see your future works!

...and by all means, keep posting your efforts - but make sure they actually contain effort.

Might try making a duplicate of the base shape, put your texture on that, and set the layer mode to Overlay (layer modes are your friend). Then you can reduce the opacity as needed and soften the gouges into brushed looking stuff...

Ok, I've done a new one, but I'm having troubles doing the "stamp," so I'm just posting the metal plate. http://spritershaven.homestead.com/files/metal_plate.gif C + C please.

I would try to define the edges a little bit, if your working off of filters, and not using a drawing tablet, I would say that you could make a like. motion blur it a bit and stick it on the bevel. Or something. It's just that it looks a bit plasticy right now. Or, grab a metal texture and overlay it onto your pic.

Yeah, there's a marked improvement on the last one.

One thing I always try to stress about the tutorials is not to get stuck in them. What you want to get out of a tutorial is not just a method used to create an effect, but rather the skills and techniques involved.

For example, a lot of brushed metal tutorials use the motion blur filter or the noise filter. Get a feel for what these are actually doing and how to apply them to other things, and you'll have learned a great deal more than just what's in the tutorial.
