Yes, I'm using a tablet.
Used a mouse for a long time prior to getting the tablet 5 months ago, though.
My 'style' has changed considerably since then.

People around here paint with just about anything...... even the trackball.
It comes down to whom is more critical when they look at things.... and how they 'see' the subject.

Ok, looking better.

The biggest issue for me is still the shape of the eye.

The best help I can possibly offer is to sit in front of a mirror staring at your eyes...

Just look at first, give it a few minutes. It might help to even pull out an encyclopedia or an anatomy book and see what the things you are looking at are called, and what they look like underneath the parts you can see (you'll better understand how to draw the parts you can see if you understand the parts you can't...)

Then grab yourself a pencil, or you mouse, and just make some sketches. They don't have to be good, you're trying to get the technical issues down.

Some better interaction between the lids and the eyeball would help too...at the moment it's kind of like a slit has been cut in the skin - there is much more going on in real life.

Keep it up =)

I'd also like to add that it may be beneficial if you flesh out the rest of the features within your constrained area (ie, the bridge of the nose, cheek bone, forehead). This way, you'll get the whole feel of where things should be, and what's missing.

[Edit: Just wanted to add that I've uploaded the full 1:1 resolution of my eye right here (87.16kb) for anyone who wishes to see how messy it actually is.

Actually, I stopped following your tutorial DG, right when I had the basic layout of my eye. Just to let you know.

I didn't have much time to fix it today so I did a little more work and that was it.

Regardless of whether or not you followed the tute, the basic fact is that no amount of shading or adding detail is going to fix that eye.

What it needs is to be properly shaped.

Until that happens, it simply isn't going to look like a human eye.

Well... that was a lot harder than it looks. I had problems trying to figure out skin tones/colours and even now my eye looks very flat. Also, the eyeball didn't go very well and I sort of gave up on it... for today at least. I'll give it another go tomorrow and see if I can make needed improvements.

I cheat.

Make a single line path, set the brush to 1 px( depending on image size), fade X ( gotta experiment to get the right distance depending on the size of your image), and with the pen tool active right click the canvas, stroke path, select brush, click OK.

Modify the path and stroke distance as you go.

Well, I've seen a few of these threads since I've been here, but this is the first time I've decided to give it a go. This is only my second painting (1st was my sig below), but don't be afraid to completely rip into me. I'd actually appreciate it if you did I'd like to gain a lot more skill with my mouse, instead of relying more on PS.

The first thing I notice is that the eyelid isn't thick enough, like the part where it folds into the skin, and just in general. Does the iris look too big to any of you, as well? I based it off my own eye, but I think I might have large iris'.

Edit: few fixes on the lower eyelid
Edit2: after clicking back and forth between the two, I've noticed it's still not quite enough. May be back in a bit with an update, but I have homework to take care of..

Lookie...a new Yannah.

Raptor..looks good so far..very nice. The eybrow and lashes look well defined, but by contrast the rest of it is too simplistic. The eye itslef looks flat. I mean the eye..not the surrounding skin, dig? Up your contrasts and values moving into it...more variation. The folds around the eye are a bit (just a bit) off as well, look closer at your eye..the outer corners shouldn't have circling folds, but that's what seems to be happening on the left side there. The eyelid itself looks good, until it interacts with the eyeball. You were right, it has no weight, needs a thickness by defining more of a highlight area just under the eye..showing that "ridge" that portrays the weight of it.

Darker down...lighten up...more variance, and less "smooth"ness.

Keep going

In addition to what DG said, maybe try some more color variation in the iris. Also that flehsy-bump-thingy in the inner corner moves in to cover more of the ball, rather than just the red edge that you have now. Right below the bottom lid, you can see the roundness of the eyeball, as well. Remember it`s a complete ball, not just the part you can see.
Textured brushes work really well for blending colors, too.
Nice work for your second painting. Stick wih it .

Bleh, I lost my post.

So like I had said, I flipped the canvas and felt the shape was off a tad. Here's the reworked version, with a few of the things that were mentioned here as well. The bottom lid still feels a bit thin to me, but I'll take care of that tomorrow. My (real) eyes hurt.

Thanks for the advice guys, its much appreciated

Remember also that "that flehsy-bump-thingy in the inner corner" is actually 2 different things!

One of the most common flaws in painted eyes is simply sticking a pink bump there.

The Caruncula is the glob in the very corner, and off that comes the Semilunar Fold, which kind of wraps around the eyeball a little bit.

Raptor - everything else about your painting has been covered so I'll leave it at that.

db: That is really great. Some thoughts though:

1. The veins are slightly too pink and little too sharp (they are actually under the cornea so would look a little more diffuse).

2. The skin looks a little too mottled. I have freckles but that looks a little... difficult to describe - I like the effect but it just jars slightly.

But other than that it is looking awesome
