Hi kids.

I'm back again with a WIP.. Michael says he loves em and i understand that, i always think it's neat to see how people go about their ways and for the user to learn along the process and take in more education in the long run.. actually i guess thats the entire point.

Anywho i just took this quick 1 min sketch of a combination of ideas embedded in memory of beatiful balcony's with a background of some luscious landscape or other.. I may be being a lil ambitious considering this is only like my 3rd digital.. by i figured atleast i'll learn alot and it'll keep my eager to try harder at adapting to the ways of the stylus pen..

I searched for a good half an hour on Google for painting tutorials for rocks and such and only got Terragen things, i know i saw a quick mention of one with an even betr insight so while ur crit'ing if u got a link or a betr search on google or something id appreciate it.. i looked in the faq too but that long list of "How do i paint X" didnt have rocks on it.. or mayb im blind, lol.. anywho..

heres the 4 images all together

Good start.

If you can`t find a tutorial on painting rocks, find some pictures of them and study how the light reacts with them.
Then paint what you see, not what you think you see. Make some custom brushes and play with them, see how they work. Use blending modes on the brushes.

thanks db.. thats what i ended up doin is using 4 pictures of rocks.. mine are too unison.. and need to be random and have splashed of gray and other earth tones still.. i suppose i should look into ur suggestion of playing with diff brushes.. anywho ive been goin over all the diff things first then gonna figure out how to improve a few that i did wrong in the first place.. like the blue bowl, is my highlight too significant or... im not sure but tis obviously my hgihlight shadow... the btm of the bowl is farthest from the eye and the top part is inset from the platform a foot or so... anywho this update is mostly the starting of some grass which i just kind of took a shot in the dark and started stroking some greens in randomly.. and an opinion on the darkness/lightness of my sky would be nice.. hopefully some inspiration for what to do with it will come soon but right now it seems to nail the eye saying "Hi im really dang bright.".. anywho heres the pic.. i'll work on it more tmrw... g'night

ok, finished the grass to my liking, darkened the sky but i'll still devote tme to it and horizon objects later.. started the other cliff with the same method as the first so when i read and implement advice and techinique from that tut or others i may find that i can kind of go bout the same way with it all.. next chance i get will go to those rock and the start of the waterfall, atleast until the drop, i dont want to add splash details til the rocks are where i like them.. anywho, suggestions and crits are highly appreciated, especially on the blue bowl and any others on the rocks. ty

Good to see that you're tackling new, challenging things, man.
I think more of us should be doing the same.

Let me get out some thoughts that are just jumping all over my mind right at the moment.
The rocks... they feel......... mmm..... like they've been done in coloured pencils.
Warm tones... lacking a lot of varience... and they just seem so..... planned. They don't strike the "rock" appeal to me.
Does that make any sense?
The next thing I'm wondering....
is this a balcony.... or more of just a platform?
I ask this, just to know whether or not the "inside" of these little blue portions are going to be fleshed out to create depth.

Perspective and lighting really seems to be throwing things off for me at the moment.
Lets take a brief look at the lighting on the rock structure on the right.
Here's a little piece...

Similar issues exist on the rock portions to the left.... not as severe though.
At present, the top balcony isn't casting any sort of shadow. We've got some tone variation thrown in there to create the form of the object.... but no real shadows or depth has been created.

Although faint...
I'm digging the sky. Good choice putting those pinks in there. My only tiff with it might be that normally pinks are seen closer to the time of day when the sun sets or rises. So perhaps some slightly darker hues of blue could be used... whereas, at present, those blues make me think of noon.
Perhaps that's just me, and personal perception though. Additional opinions are probably needed for that.

The grass bit in the fore-ground is a little confusing. While it incinuates that there is a hump or something.... the tones of the grass have stayed the same.
Grass typically has some highlights thrown into it too. There's always blades that face the sun, and give us some bright bits.... don't forget about 'em.
The idea behind eventually blending blades of grass into a sea of green for the horizon is spot on. It just needs some work.
Keep hackin' at it and trying a few different things.

Good progression...
I look forward to seeing more.

Whoa. thnx mikey lets see.. first i'll take care of taking off the prev image when i post a new 1, np..

yeah as i know the rocks arent even, eh theyre crap, i'll likely totally redo or retry the farther rocks... and mess with the ones closer up, personally a good roughing up change in tones should go a long away i think..

the blue "bowl like" support for the platform(i may add a rail later but mayb not, havent decided yet).. anywho im having ahard time figuring where the highlight should be to give it the depth i want.. mayb i should find a reference pic or too of some coffe cups or something of similar shape..

my light source, or sun, is from behind the viewer to the right and i did those stupid rocks shading wrong then now i that i rethink it.. i suppose the right cliff from the waterfall should pose a shadow on the rest of the rocks there, eh?

o and a final word or explanation.. the sky wasnt techinically "started" or anything it was just way too white so i toned it to make it seem closer, i'll mess with it later and mention it when i want it really critiqued.. i may add a silhouette(spelling?) of another lil futuristic city or something.. not sure.. thanks again mikey, helps alot to focus on some issues.. i'll read it later when im back to editing it.. gonna go build me a pool table, cya kids
