Hi, all, I was wondering how I am able to create a tiled grid effect that is slightly embossed. Its pretty hard to explain exactly what I mean, but to have an idea of what I mean, an example is shown on the splash screen when you load up Adobe Elements. On the left hand side is a tile grid effect that seems embossed a little.

How can I create this exact effect. Is it via a filter?!?

If anyone can lead to to some example they may think i'm on about i'll be pleased to corporate.

Cheers

Tryst

1) new image, 10x10 (pick a number...)

2) create new layer

2) pencil tool - draw a 1 pixel thick black line across the top and right sides

3) select >> all

4) edit >> define pattern

5) new image, however big you want it

6) new layer

7) edit >> fill >> pattern

8) duplicate layer.

9) lock pixles on bottom grid layer

10) edit >> fill >> white

11) nudge the bottom grid layer down and left 1 pixel.

12) play with until happy.

Pardon me while I take this on an aside; I've noticed everybody takes a Select -> All before defining a pattern.

Why? Just defining a pattern works fine in 6+. Did I miss something? Perhaps a remnant from 6- days?

You assume everybody has 6+. That is not always the case, and it is best to assume worst-case scenario. Otherwise, the person may come back complaining some part didn't work right, yadda yadda yadda.

No, I understand not everybody has 6+ (too often I've tried to help somebody who comes back and says "That menu option isn't there!"). I just wanted to know if that's something you had to do in 6-, but you've answered that for me

I didn't even realize you no longer had to select it first =)

I jumped from 5.0 to 7.0. In 5.0 yuou have to have something selected in order to define a pattern.

OK now we have solved the main question (tryst: Welcome - we'd like to see what you come up with using DL's technique) and the sub one we can address the following:

Is there a random PS effects name generator thingy out there?

I was thinking of adding this to the FAQ in the 'How do I make an image like X' section but where do you draw the line?

Burning cloud effect that looks like a fried egg with a tiny hat in it?

Something that is reminisent of a chrome dog being eaten by purple fungus?

Hehe....I must say that I really hate seeing the word "effect" appended to a description...

=)
