Just kind of testing out a stone texture on here... Does it look real enough?

Doesn't really appeal to me, no.
I don't see it and think "stone".

I do not think it looks like stone either. It kinda looks like a wrinkled blanket, though.

Yup...looks kinda fluffy.

And, of course, if you're going to have stone with runes on it, you gotta carve them in =)

This is from years ago, (and only a small part of a much bigger piece) but it's pretty easy to do.

It used to look a lot more like stone to me then it does now...
Anyways, the gist of it was starting with a noise > blur channel. Then lighting effects on a grey layer, and you get the ugly puffy grey circle mess. Then star in a corner, use the blur tool just a little to smooth out an area, and the sharpen just a little. Grab a 1px soft black paintbrush, set to about 15% opacity, make a new layer, set to 70-75% opacity and use the brush to define edges. Over and over and over again, it should be able to really make them noticeable. Next, grab your burn tool (or a dark paintbrush with the mode set to color burn), and darken inside the lines. Then, grab the dodge tool (or brush on dodge mode) and highlight the edges which should be higher. Final step - sharpen.
When you want to add color, just put the colors you want on a low opacity layer above set to... color.

Most of the colors and texture on the top piece of stone was taken from a tiled 100x100 pixle image of a stone (which didn't tile well, so I needed to paintover a lot of it - but this post isn't about painting stones), however all the rust holes, and all the chips/indents, as well as some of the colors were added with the method above.
