I have a quick question, when a PS file is saved as a jpeg, does it retain it's transparency?

If you want to save for the web, look at this tutorial about saving in *.gif for the web, and even if you do save it in gif, don't toss away your PSD, unless you are absolutely certain you won't ever need it again.

You might also want to look into PNG files. Not all that well supported on the web but their supported by a wealth of other multimedia applications and it's about the only low level file type that supports full 8-bit alpha transparency.

PNGs are underused. I like them more than gifs for still images with transparency. Can you do animation with PNGs?

Actually, PNGs are far better supported than people think. For example, my fortune cookie sig is a PNG (because you can't use GIFs with GD). Has anyone had problems with the transparency?

(Don't usually append my sig to posts this short, but I think it's appropriate here...)

What's GD? Is that anything like VD?

InSiDeR: Haha... terribly funny. Letting off some steam today? For what it's worth, I think you may be one of the few in this thread who don't care, considering the topic at hand. Now be a nice lad and tell me if you see any problems in the transparency for my sig.

krets: Oh, no man, it's far worse. GD makes VD look like the sniffles.

Seriously, though, GD is a library of image manipulation functions for PHP. Very fun to play with.

Suho, 8-bit PNG's with 1-bit transparency are supported quite well but the 24-bit png's with the full 8-bit alpha are another story. It's good to see you playing with PHP though. Heh, I told you you'd get hooked on it.

Ah, thanks for that clarification, Drac. Yes, you were right--I got seriously hooked on PHP. So hooked, in fact, that my entire site is one big PHP template. You wouldn't believe how easy it makes it to keep things updated and make little changes. Well, actually, you probably would believe it...

I started a couple of FAQs the other day:

:FAQ: Can you give me more information on the PNG image format?

:FAQ: How do I create images wih PHP using the GD module?
