I know this isn't exactly the answer to your question, but I think you will learn a lot, likely answer your question, and probably learn a lot more than you ever thought possible. Have fun, a truly great little tutorial/article.

Displacement maps are one of my favorite things... but they're not going to be used well by a beginner (so that it does something worthwhile) ....

Guru's has a very nice tut. on the displacement filter. Used wisely the displacement filter is very very versatile and .... nifty.

oh boy.... lets see if this makes sense ?

I guess you could call it a mould that you place underneath your image and the image then takes on that particular shape.

The shape is controlled or expressed by the colors black, white and gray. (grey?)
Black values move the pixels of your colored image to the right or down while white values move the pixels to the left or up and gray values either keep it flat or depending on the value give you some more subtle movements.

So in essence your displacement map is an image in b/w mostly shapes like circles squares or whatever other shape or pattern you choose.

You create your b/w image and save it as a psd or whatever and call it up through the displacement filter.

It is something you really have to play with but it is a lot of fun.
Mobruls link above is what I recommend too.

Thank you Master Nelson for this wisdom here .

What is a D-Map? It's a PSD file used specifically with Displace.
How does it work? Well, that's a whole new can of worms.
I would like to think that Steve and I pretty much have it covered, but it can be an esoteric subject and can take a long time to finally understand.
Start at the beginning of both links and take it slow.
Take the time to mess around. Experiment. Don't be afraid. It won't bite.

While I'm at it, I would like to point out a fundamental difference between me and Steve when it comes to Displace. Steve says push... sort of; I say pull or grab/grabitude. He goes one way and I go the other.

Displace Filter, Introductory Examples

quote:
As expected, diagonal movement, up and to left for white DMap, down and to right for black DMap.

My version:

quote:
... grabs from the lower-right for white D-Map, and upper-left for black D-Map.

See: Solids and Circle Grads.

Be aware of that difference, else you may get seriously confused. Then again, maybe me mentioning it will cause some confusion. Doh!

Guess we all have to chime in!

Let's see how succinct I can be.

The displacement MAP is the instruction set the Displace FILTER refers to. The Displacement MAP is a stand-alone, separate file. It can be the same dimensions as the target image, but it doesn't have to be.

The Displace FILTER will distort the target image in proportion to the brightness values present in the Displacement MAP. Parameters are set in the Displace FILTER interface to determine how the distortion is applied, but it is all based on brightness values in the Displacement MAP.

That's an over-simplification of course, but it's the essence of the relationship between target image, Displace FILTER and Displacement MAP. It's definately a "learn by doing" filter.

Xdreamer's sig would make a wild D-Map, eh?
