Hello docilebob,

I have a really bad scan that I would like to learn how to salvage.
The little boy's hair is platinum-white. His eyes are ice-blue The shirt is blue. The backdrop is white.

Have you any suggestions about improving this pic?

ThanX

well, I'm not DB, but I'll give a couple quick thoughts -

1) I'd add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. pick 'reds' from the drop down and lower the saturation to reduce the overactive red.

2) I'd also throw a curves adjustment to even out the tones.

3) the general blurriness and the sligth pixelation on the left side of the image are problems I'm less used to, and I'll let docile bob answer that one

Well, my first reaction is..No. But it depends alot on what you`re using it for. (What are you using it for ?)

Then, I qualify with *How much do you enjoy handwork ?* There`s alot of information that`s just not there, that will have to be replaced by hand.

My next question would be * Is the original like that, or just the scan ?* If it`s just the scan, rescan it correctly.

DLs suggestions will help, but in some of those areas, you`re going to have to make some shit up. ( If you can`t rescan)

Another problem is the crappy JPG compression. If you were the one who scanned it, keep in mind that saving it in the hightest possible quality, or even BMP, will keep you much happier.

sorry to butt in here....
like mentioned before you need a better scan of the image and then you can work with it.

I gave it a quick go now but with lots of work, time and patience you can at least improve it a little.

quickie here - tried to sharpen it a little and a few adjustment layers also made some adjustments in the Channels. Still needs a lot more adjustments just ment as a pointer ..... have to go work

edit: just read your post .... if this is what your after I will expand on it later on.

there's a pretty easy way to fix a bad scan.
1. load the pic
2. go over to filters>Noise>dust and scratches
3. adjust the sliders a bit (this will blur up the image anf smooth it out a bit so don't go over)
4. next just go over filters>sharpen>unsharpen mask adjust the sliders and your done

you might have to do the dust and scratches or the sharpen stuff twice to get a good result. I've done this tons of times works like a charm.
