Preserved Topic: Just wanna show off the direction i'm going for and get some feedback... (Page 1 of 1)

This is the beginnings of the index for my new semi-minimalist version of netmosis.com

Basically i'm going for a simple, clean look with powerful functions behind it all. The site will all eventually be ASP driven with a section for artists to register and directly submit their artwork to me for review. The pages listing art will be able to sort art by date, artist, name, or downloads. I may have it possible for users to write reviews on each piece of art. In the tools section i will offer user submitted tutorials or tutorials i write (gotta write 'em), music loops by yours truly, and shapes for photoshop...of course this will be my first dynamically driven site so it might take a while...until then i've got my current site...

I think i've got that gears.gif bg optimized as low it will go but it's still 9k...the script alone is about 8k...so i'm pushing the limits of a minimalist site...

<edit>um...i did it all via notepad so it's got a few glitches to work out at anything below 800x600 maximized, and yes the blahh will be replaced by something</edit>...

nice idea, personally i would go for NON WHITE background!
like try grey, or brown or grey/blue, or something, just to make it a little different, and nicer on the eyes...
other than that, i really like it, two other things im not sure about though:
1) the alignment. it just seems out. when you stay minimalistic, and as such avoid borders and the like, layout can prove a challenge.
2) the dropdowns. im not sure if i like the way they all drop down the same amount, even if there arent enuogh options to fill the box.
other than that, nice work!

<edit> ooh - another thing - maybe you should try to mould the text to the gears a little more, or something... it jsut dont look toally right, missign something....</edit>
<edit again> oh, and your cogs only have "reality", not "false reality". in case you didnt notice.<edit>

yeah i've been tossing and turning over the same size drops or not...i just decided to pick one and throw it out...i may end up going the other way...

i kinda like the black and white...i could try a light gray or something see how it looks...whatever...

i agree about the alignment looking off...i think it has to with the fact that there's nothing in the middle of the page though...that space will eventually be filled though...originally i wanted to have the gears move when you mouseover but i'll have to check out how that looks and how it affects the loading time...of course the slogan text would move with it...

to fill the middle of the page i figured these were my options:

1. put the news and recent updates

2. put a netmosis.com blurb

3. or work out somekinda dhtml thing where you can drag various letters of "netmosis.com - we're on the..." or they float around or something like that...some kinda cool dhtml gimmick using typography...or maybe the netmosis.com "n" in ascii...haha that's it i'll do an ascii art logo...

any other suggestions welcome...

I added a news fader...right now it only plays my netmosis slogan but once i release the site i'll have news...

The javascript (and the 5 more images i added) kinda added to the file size...could anyone lemme know how long it takes them to load the page...

Just got two comments:
The text in the left-most cog (netmosis.com) looks odd cause it sticks out onto one of the cog's teeth whereas all the other text is well withing the other cogs. It just looks like you were forced to have that text poking out rather than it being planned.

The drop downs for artists and netmosis are cut off by the cog right below them. Can't see the all the links in the drop down menus.

Load time was just fine for me ... can't tell you a precise time, but it was quick.
