it could work.
im still not sure about the layout.
i woudl go for one of two options:
1) percentage width tables. ok im not sure about this, just an idea, but what if the page spread across the width of the window?
so each option would be centered in a 25% wide cell... and the icon centered....
2) centered on the page - i like this idea more. vertically and horiz centered.
heres what i mean:

i did this too, but im not sure if i like it - just felt like messing.

...and thats what i reckon.

yeah those are ideas i've been playing with but i've found it nearly impossible to get everything centered cuz of the dropdowns...if everything is percentage based the positioning of the layers gets really fucked up...i'll try playing with it...can you do percentage based layers?....i like the black bottom idea - looks great...probably use that - thanks a lot....helps to stop the one hundred percent white background and that way i can make my gears white like i originally intended...btw the way did anyone notice that if you load the page at more than 800x600 maxed you see the gears? should i keep them or 86...

woo-hoo! cogs!
i was wondering where they were!
ok, as far as percentage based layers - the answer is no.
BUT, they way i usually get around it is by the position:relative tag.
that way, you put your layers where you want 'em.

i tried relative positioning and the drop downs appear in a cascading manner from the upper left corner when i mouseover....how i do the table alignment doesn't help either...funky stuff...

Looks very good net... but for some reason the scroll bar on the right side of the window is greyed out, as if your page fit in the window, which for me it doesn't. So I'm just seeing the top of the cogs, and the words "we're" and "edge". Since the cogs are in a table cell and not part of the <body background>, and since it doesn't look like you have any code to disable the scrollbars, I would guess this is a side effect of your layers.

drakkor-
the cogs are the bg of a table set at the bottom of the page...i used a little css to get the scrollbar black but it doesn't need to scroll unless you are below 800x600 max...if you are say at 1024 max you should see all or at least most of the cogs...technically the cogs don't take up page space since they a bg of percentage based table...they're kinda nifty that way...

netmosis - looks nice, i still am not sure about how it is so "top and left", but chances are its not worth the effort to chage that....
one little cross compatibility issue - the dropdowns are full width in IE, but only as wide as the widest text in NS.
just thought you may want to know.
the quickest way i can think of fixing that is putting the menu items in tables with specified widths.

buncha-
yeah i realized that about the ns thing with layers i didn't even think about using tables in the layers-
thanks. last time i worked on it i didn't have the energy to try to fix it for netscape...

funny thing happened when i stuck the tables in the layers...sure they were all 100px wide because of the tables but none of the links in the tables showed up...wierd...i guess i'll just stick with off sized off set layers in netscape for now...

[edit]ah...cool idea i just had...instead of tables, 1px tall by 100px wide transparent gif[/edit]
