Preserved Topic: Doin' a project for a friend (Page 1 of 1)

Can someone give me some feedback on this site I'm doing for a friend
(of my wife's)? I slapped it together in a couple of hours (I know... that excuse doesn't work here :-)

It's pretty simple, although -compared to what she already has, (and spent some pretty-good cash for) it's a masterpiece.

Some things off the top that I'd like to do are a flash-5 preloader and labelling the gel buttons:

The front page pissed me off. Very lame. The lens flare makes me want to shoot myself in the eye.
Where is the page I wonder?... this takes up next to nothing of the screen.
It doesn't flow what-so-ever.
The font was annoying as well as I went deeper into the site.
What is that e-mail button doing out in the middle of no-where?
There is a border around two edges of that 'title' block?... hmm... I don't even know what to say about it...... how about....... why?

Your site seemed weak as well. Annoying background added in with a flash portion that has the idea of an interface that wants depth.... but ultimately has none.
Everything 'pops'.... if you're going to have Flash... you mgiht as well fade it.... it makes it more smooth.
Once again... empty space.... way too much of it.
The Title line won't stop repeating..... is it supposed to do that?... I hope not. I'd get rid of that button on the bottom too. Just turn the e-mail link into text I think.
I'm assuming you view in 800 x 600... cause the eye-sore of a background after you push all the buttons, tiles part way through the screen and blocks the text.

I will say this however.... and this is not to cusion the blow of any offense you may take to my post...
You do have a fair amount of actual content to be read in these projects.... which is more than a lot of the sites that have been posted here recently.

why flash? it seems to serve no point at all, and its not even very good flash (very little flash *is* good).

the site is for a painter, right? i dont see anything "painterly" at all within the site. the font is difficult to read. there is no "title" other than "new page 1"

about your personal site... linux is NOT unix (under links). grr.. i hate it when people try to get critiques on 2 seperate websites in the same thread.

Umm... Ever heard of Netscape? You only used the Embed Tag to put Flash in you pages... In Netscape 4 it comes up as an Unknown Plugin!!! Even if a Netscape 4 User has Flash 5 Installed you page won't work at all!

Apart from that It just lacked well... almost everything. Put some Passion into you design, and make the technical side of you design as anal retentive as possible so it always works...


Your Personal Homepage was EXACTLY the Same... Whats the point of being a Designer if everything you do all looks the same, and is always done the same way!!! Learn more, much more, then you will be able to design well.

Probably using it to prop up this unbalanced and non-dynamic site. I was too bored to continue.

I was viewing this site on a very fast connection and it took a *long* time to load. I really don't think Flash is a good idea here. If you continue to use it, please optimize it. The only effect is the fading in/out and the download time is just not worth it just for that.

Also, using the lens flare as the main effect is going to get you seriously hurt. It's kind of like chanting "Israel rules" in a crowd of angry Palestinians.

I guess my advice would be to hang around this forum for a while and pick up some techniques here and improve your design with them. I'm sure nobody meant any offense as they are just being honest about the design you presented. Take the criticism and use it to make it better.
