The intent of my site is going to be a place to show off my graphics, and maybe post a few tutorials. I'm not trying for anything flashy (actually, subdued would be better -- make the gallery images stand out).

Given that, I'm looking for a layout that's subdued but not amateurish. This is a non-working mockup (at 640x480 - the real site will autosize, of course). Opinions?

(placing inline, since it's only 9k)

The gallery image names (pros, chess) in the nav section will be browser text (verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif), as is the info text. The catagory names (Home, Gallery) will be graphical (currently ITC Benguiat Gothic, but that may change).

I have zero skill at site design, so any input is appreciated

i worked on a site that *exact* background color several months ago. black will not be an option for anything other than shadings. i found that i got sick of looking at the color after a while.

great images make a great site. why spend loads of money on a great painting (your sample artwork) if the frame (your site) fails to do it justice?

its nice, but dull. the biggest problem i see with both of your designs is that there is too *much* whitespace. its great to consider 640x480 people, but theres not much for people with higher resolutions to look at.

Well, keep in mind that the navbar is going to get pretty long, with a link to each and every gallery image and tutorial. I'll probably add catagories as I go on.

The info text should also expand as I add 'news' items. The gallery and tutorial pages will fill most of the right side of the page.

Is simulated paper a bad technique? I created a site ages ago that had a paper texture as a background, and I kind of liked it. Might be trite, though, I have no idea.

If you like it, why does it matter?

www.photshopclub.com has a good "old paper" style background... I dig that site.. except for the annoying navigation system.

Krets is good, Krets is wize.

However, put yourself in your viewers eyes and decide what effect you want the color-scheme to have: "make" them want to turn the page or put them to sleep. Color accents have been discussed at length here, I suggest you add some.

Well, as much as I like simple in general, this is a bit too simple for me. Can I make a suggestion? Why not take a really nice 3D image you've done and use it as a bg or main graphic for the main page, maybe do it half-wireframe and half-shaded or something. Right now there's nothing there that really tells me anything about what you do or why the page is there, ya know? You might take a look at the user pages at 3Dluvr at http://www.3dluvr.com/content/userz.php and see how some of them have displayed their work, might give you some ideas.

On a totally separate note Das, drop me an e-mail if ya get a chance. Thanks.

Chris
