I kinda like it, but, the slant on the letters makes it hard to read.

And...ummm..It has a border.

If you try to fail and succeed, which have you done ?

Yep... i'd make those letters larger...
then make the ones under it smaller and in a different font...
then I'd fill the rectangle with yellow... turn the opacity waaaay down so that it's barely yellow.

edit:.... oh... and yeah... I like.

The first cut had an unshaded globe, and it looked brutally flat, which bugged me. So I defined the edge a little and put a gradient in, and when I downsampled to gif, I got that ring on the globe. Does that bug anyone else, cause I kind of hate it.

OK, taxon, I like all your suggestions. How's this? And I bagged the faux italics (skew, actually).

mmmm.... bacon...

I definately like it more.
I'd try increasing the opacity a little more on the bground... see if you can get a tad more yellow in it...
Where it says...'world without borders'... the text is too stretched I think...
the space between each letter is too large...
I'd fix that.. and so you don't end up with extra "white space" when you do it....
make 1px arrows... so it looks like this....

<-------- world without borders ----------->

except of course, with solid lines...

I take that back... I looked at it a bit more....
I'd try sliding the globe to the left a bit... then putting a 1px line under the top text... and I'd leave teh bottom text as is...

Sorry, I don't agree about the rotation. It's so obvious that it has no artistic merit, IMO.

I'm working toward a faux-corporate feel. With the fatuous "world without borders" crap, and the vaguely Art Deco font. I was kind of seeing the Daily Planet from the old Superman series.

I'm absolutely willing to make one spin as a technical exercise, but I won' plonk it in my sig, sorry.

Grumble has a good point.

But I wouldn't go with the two globes idea... I'd have one of those maps that has the globe all cut up so that it can be layed flat... and I'd try running that on the top line to the rectangle... and then moving everythign else under it.

It's not to say that your sige right now doesn't work....
but like I said.... it is a good point.

GRUMBLE: Point well taken. taxon, that's called a map gore, if I recall correctly.

If I can figure out where to get one, I'll use that for sure.

I don't intend any disrespect toward our friends from the old world....

Edit: It's called an interrupted Mollweide projection, I guess. Got one. Stay tuned...

I have one suggestion: Make it smaller!

I like it, but for what it contains it could easily be half the size...which would only make it look better

Here's the switch to the entire world map:

Here's a smaller one. DL, I can only assume you meant half the *area*, because at half the width it's pretty illegible.

Edit: yanked my default sig out.

Maybe it'd look better in the "peeled orange" projection if the
oceans were more of a pastel blue? Just a thought.

Yes, the new size is very good

I think it looks better as a regular globe though - I see the point of making it opened, but it's just visually less appealing (and a slight bi tconfusing at first glance).

Anyway... before you go back to the globe... have you tried it with an outline around the map?

taxon: tried an outline right away, and hated it right away.
ZOX, DL: I like the globe better too. It's a stronger visual element.
kevincar: pastel??!?
docilebob: I'd consider both hemispheres on the left end, but I can't see one on each. Too symmetrical.

Anyway, I like the smaller size too (0.7 times the width = 0.5 times the area) and I'll probably revert to the western hemisphere.

I don't want to dis our eastern hemisphere pals. I could do a script that alternated between E and W views...

If HTML would work in other forums, I'd like to do a version that showed the globe rotated with the viewers local timezone centered. It would take a script that sent the local timezone in the query URL, and 24 versions of the globe. It would be kind of worth it, though. I've been wanting to do a script sig that customizes for each viewer.

If I had control of the server I'm hosting on (I don't) I could use xearth to generate one dynamically, with the appropriate shading for the time of day it was viewed, centered on the viewer's timezone. Sigh.
