Hi, this is basically the first 'good' thing i have done in 3d Studio max. I painted the bump map in photoshop and the colour map, which incidently is a bit rubbish. Its basically my left hand. I would put bones in and skin it but the file has gone all weird and Max locks up everytime i try and open it, any ideas anyone?

Also has anyone out there heard of Vue D'espirit, its another landscape program, but we have bryce you cry, indeed but this one does trees, and shrubs, each one is randomly generated. So its cool. Anyway this is something i ran togther with it, its a link because this one is very very widescreen.

Comments on the above two things, and any advice at all on how to get into the industry are more than welcome.

That looks really sweet, relain, except for the palm trees. The ones you have look just like stalks with leaves sprouting out at the tops. Here's a good reference image.

The hand looks really nice man, good stuff. I'd love to see you continue with that and do the rest of the arm and see how it goes. Good stuff...

yeah the palm trees suck, they're procedural ones so they're a little bit fake. Is there any way to make good trees and stuff by hand without spending hours?hmm i spect not.
Anyway cheers for the comments, and yeah i hope to use the hand as part of a human sometime, when i finally finish this goddamned cartoon sheep :-)

I don't know how to fix a corrupted file, but have you been saving in stages along the way?
If not this is a good lesson to learn from
I lost a 3 hour model once because I didn't save, now I usually have 30-100 saves for any given model.Just about every little tweak I save as a new object.

The hand looks good, nice structure, nice details in the textures, veins, wrinkles, etc. The only thing that looks odd to me are the creases in the fingers, but that's probably from the camera angle.

You could try exporting the hand as a 3ds or a DXF...and then re-importing it.

If you are stuck...look on the bright side...we all learn from our mistakes. I bet from now on you'll save various copies of your model at different stages just in case something like this happens.
