Cool test shot. I'd like to see it reacting to the material on the pedestal a bit more tho, it looks cool but not really real, ya know? Good stuff overall, i need to find some more time to spend playing with 3d...

Yeah, it's just a test of the caustics. The glass doesn't reflect, and I deliberately muted the shadow, so there's not much anchoring it to the scene. The only thing that gives it any sense of belonging is the refraction.

I'll probably re-shoot the scene when I get Worldbuilder sometime this week. Then I can give it an interesting environment.

I would think that the glass, though transparent/translucent, would still cast some shadow given the intensity of the light cast upon it...

Yes, it did. Like I said, I deliberately muted the shadow to see the caustic better. It's a test image.

Das? did you ever set up an actual wine glass filled with red wine, then site in in a similar light to see what this looked like??

I just don't think the caustics would be so broken up as they are in your rendering. The 3D program might think this looks real, but you may be a long way off. I suggest trying this for real so you can get an idea as to how your final image should look. Just my suggestions though.

You glass work on a whole is great! The actual wine glass it self is so photoreal! Great work!

No, the caustic is not 'realistic'. Unfortunately, I haven't quite got a grasp on how to control what Mental Ray does with caustics. The photon map settings are difficult to understand, and proper test renders take a long time. Eventually, I'll figure it out.

I'd like to clarify that I didn't post this to say 'look how real this looks'. I was playing with Mental Ray (as I said when I started the thread), trying to learn how caustics work, and this was one of the test images. I posted it because I thought it looked cool, and I thought some of the Ozones crew might think "Neat".

Again, this is a test image. It's not intended to look real. It's not final. I just modelled a quick and simple glass with liquid and started playing, trying to get a handle on photon-mapped caustics. I turned off reflections and global illumination to get quicker render times. If I was going for realism, I'd put a reflection on the glass, intensify the shadow, turn on gi, and mute the caustic. I'd also hold off posting until I can actually do a realistic caustic with Mental Ray.

I just posted this because I thought it looked cool. Perhaps I was mistaken.

looks pretty good. Causics are neat...but take way too long to calculate I love it for stills tho.

I too have been playing with caustics and radiosity for an upcoming project I am assigned to, I'd love to compaire notes with you on our results as soon as I get some test renders done. (yes, I too will be doing it in Softimage

no, it's definatley cool DAS, but most of us here will always have something to critique about an image...even when it's not asked for

Regarding the comments made though...how the glass will appear will depend on many things...right now it kind of looks like tinted glass.

as has been said...nice imoage any which way.

I agree with DL-44...I like your image for what is, I just threw in my two cents just for the hell of it...
