Ok, I don't even know if this is the right forum to post this, but what the hell.

I'm making a webpage, having fun, doodah, doodah, checking it out in Opera 6.04, Mozilla 1.0, and Internet Explorer 5. However, I don't know if people out there have done a mass migration to IE 6 already or not. If I could, I would install IE 6 while keeping IE5 and use both for testing.

As it is, I must make a choice. Are IE users out there mostly 5, 5.5, or 6? I want, for instance, to use limited PNG graphics, and I know Mozilla and Opera both handle them perfectly. IE5 doesn't (in the PC), but 6 might. And etc, etc.

I need to know whether to waste my time installing IE6.

Thanks,
-D

Well, before actually trying to answer your question (whcih IE browser version is more popular...I think we had a thread on the usage of browsers here...you could do a search...)

Maybe you should first read this http://www.tecchannel.de/software/820/19.html

I think that after reading it, you may have to drop the whole '.PNG' thing...or drop the IE thing...

I'm curious to see what you decide...I personally am a great fan of .PNG...and therefore, IE is my greatest enemy...

Keep in mind as well that you can't run multiple version of IE under windows.

Well, I found a thread on browser usage, and was taken to www.thecounter.com/stats to take a look at how many people were using IE6. Afterwards, I went to a bunch of other sites to verify the data. While the numbers vary, it's sad to see that IE5 still dominates, with something along 50% of the browsers out there, and that IE6 is second, with something like 50% out there.

Oh, well, I wasn't thinking it was going to be any different, but since IE6 seems to be the accepted new browser, I'll install it. Still won't take the PNGs off (there are but a few), since even IE5Mac is able to process them correctly. But no reason to have a bunch of JavaScript errors and CSS problems.

I like Opera, I like Mozilla. I like the price I don't have to pay for them, contrary to IE. If I drive people away, hurray! less bandwidth to worry about. If I can convert but a few, hurrah.

Actually, before I install IE6, I need to know this: Will it install a new version of Media Player, or ANY other application? Does anyone know? I love media player 6.4, consider anything above to just not be worth it.

So, what say you?

No, you don't have to install any other applications together with IE. Just look out for "custom setup" or something like that. There, you should be able to uncheck all the parts you don't need.
