OK in case you missed things, e.g.:
www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum15/HTML/000100.html
We have finalised on a design converted it into HTML and am moving forward with the site. However we'd like your ideas, opinions and browser tests.
I've made sure it works in IE6 and Op6 (although one of the buttons is missing) and it won't work properly in older browsers (but we are interested to see how badly).
Michael also doesn't like the 'Recent Rips' text or the red background to the search box - so what do people think on that or other points?

Thanks in advance

I don't see any big problem with the red search box... but the 'recent rips' doesn't do a whole lot for me... it kinda comes off as a poor rip of the 'ripper report' iffin you know what I mean. Does 'recent rips' need to be a graphic? Why not straight-ahead text? Overall however it's done very well imo. Good work.

NoJive: Thanks for your input (no pun intended). I if understand this correctly:
quote: Does 'recent rips' need to be a graphic? Why not straight-ahead text?
the I'd like to point out that it is text (try highlighting it). I've run a few CSS filters over it so it looked more like one of Michael's ideas but in the end it is just white text
We could make it more obviously ordinary text but that would look pretty ugly and I'd be more in favour of making it a graphic (which would bring us back here again).

First impressions: Overkill on the overlapping text. Every single title on the page is overlapped, and it kind of bugs me. I can see "Ripper Report" being overlapped, and the logo, but I don't see why "Recent Rips" and "Who We Are" need to be overlapped like that. What about a cleaner look (I think that's what NoKive was talking about)? Speaking of cleaner, the text of "Who We Are" looks very dirty.
Also, a little space at the bottom of the page would be nice--as it is it ends rather abruptly, and looks as if it might be cut off.
Oh, another nit-pick: I like how you guys worked in the "Steal Design" element, but I think the kerning might be off (especially the 'e's). I would go through and clean that up.
Other than that, I like what I see so far. I've been following the development on and off, and I think you guys have done a good job.
[Edit: I forgot--the search box. While I don't have any particular problems with it, I will see that you might want to make it stand out a little more, and changing the color of the box would help.]

I absolutely abhor the overlapping texts, they make my skin crawl.
I would indeed prefer the search box to be the same as the other 2 inputs, or at least not the same red it's laying on.
I don't like the opacity of the browser 'steal design' element, I think they oughta be more solid. Maybe 100% on the right fading to 0, just give something else a whirl.
I think you're asking for breakage playing the breakpoint so close to 800 wide, is it dependant on the search box? Whatever the case it breaks ugly for a less than maximized browser at 800x600 or someone with unusually thick scrollbars.
Other than that, it's pretty plain nice job really

Good point on the breakage--the text starts running over the red part...

Thanks guys - it looks like the overlapping text doesn't make people happy
The problem with the steal design has been spotted and is in the process of being corrected - interestin ideas on the fade. Perhaps one of the graphics team might want to look at that.
The search box colours? Setting it to the same grey as the login boxes makes it awfully
JKMabry: Have you got unsually thick scrollbars or is it just the way you walk??
I was wondering about that - I'll see what I can do - I'll make the search box a bit shorter and see if I can stop the wrap. Better the HSBoD than a page that breaks.
Suho1004: Yes I agree about the bottom - I've been meaning to add a copyright/privacy policy footer which will help with that.
Anymore comments? Anyone like the overlapping text? If we took out the recent rips would that be OK? Anything else?

Ah, now I see why the titles looks so jagged and ugly. I can't see any reason why not to make them graphics - it would make them look a whole lot better. Or is there any reason for using
Maybe it will be easier to get a feel of what the recent rips area will look like if we have some cases added to it? As of now, that red area is pretty dominating, but if it is covered by screenshots and text, it might feel rather different. I think what irks me the most about the recent rip title is how the word "recent" is all the way up to the top of the darker red box, without any margin.
Why are there no submit buttons?
I agree that some sort of footer would look good to bring the design together.

The main thing that bugs me is the white background. The yellow text makes it worse :P I think that section could use some tweakin', or the colors do anyway.

1) Whew! That's ugly when it breaks. If you think 800x600 is rough, look at it under 640...
2) The overlapping text works fine for me, as does the yellow, but don't put filters on it! That seems to be what is making it so ugly and jagged.
3) The search box - eh, nope, red doesn't work for me either.
4) at 1024 maximized, the layout proportions are good. However, at 800x600 (even when it doesn't break) the left side is far too dominant, leaving the left side rather squished and crammed looking.
Aside from those - mostly technical - issues I wuite like this layout/design.

I agree with most of what has been said here, so I won't repeat it.
The page does not look good in Mozilla 1.1. I'll upload a screen shot of it later on. The main problem is that all of the logos are stacked on top of each other in the top left corner and the text spans over the whole window starting halfway down. But in IE6.0 it works fine

I think I'd have to agree with the Michael character. I don't care too much for the red search box. I didn't even see it for a while
Agree with NoJive about the "Recent Rips" text. It really takes away from the "Ripper Report" text.
The "Who We Are" graphic is really jaggy on my machine and I don't really care too much for the yellow. It is the only thing on the page that is not a grey or red. Doesn't really fit me no think.
The graphic in the upper right hand corner clashes with the login boxes. For some reason to me, it just kind of runs together.
But, good stuff so far

Nice start there
However I agree with Michael about the red search.
I'd also rather see the username/password tiled horizontally instead. At the moment they fit a bit too good in with the "steal design"-bit, making them a bit hard to separate from the background.
Since this is a template my next comments may be out of line at this time, but what the...
The red left is a bit wide. I dunno what you plan on showing there, but at the moment I'd like to stretch my browser to something like 1000px wide to get a balance. And at that with legibility of the text drops. The rows just gets to damn long to be a pleasing read, making my eyes flicker trying to find the start of the next row. This leads me to my next premature comment:
Please add some white space around the textarea. At the moment it flows very close to the right browser border, and right down to the bottom of the page. I get the feeling of a clipped view, even if I know that it isn't.

I don't know to much about this stuff, but I recommend bringing the red down and around the bottom, sort of giving it a closed look. Because I too kept trying to scroll down, like there should be something down there.

Ok, on the technical side of things I'm getting the same Mozilla issues as Veneficuz. (Screen cap. in his post)
Opera 6 seems to be fine buy the edges of the overlapping text is jaggy. I think images would work better. Opera's also giving me a Javscript error on line 44.
The image pre-loaders don't seem to be working for me, I'll write a better srcipt for that when I have time.
On to the visual side...
I think it's all a little too busy.
There are 13 different harsh bands of colour (or 1px lines) running across the top 2 inches of the page. I'd like to it flow a little easier on the eye. I also still think that red is way too bright. That shade of yellow is a little off puting as well. The whole thing just feels a little too "256 colour VGA" to me. You've got a little blue in the top right header image, why not use another soft blue tone to make it less harsh in the other areas?
The content text seems too crammed. There's definatly not enough white space around it.
Depth. There is none. You either have fully saturated colours or completly desaturated greys, nothing inbetween. The only place you have any kind of gradiant is the drop shadows on the menu text which flattens out everything else.
Edit: I took some photoshop liberties to help illustrate what I was talking about:
How about something with a little more depth, a little less colour and a tiny bit more blue?

yah.... luvin' that Drac.
great stuff there.
I pressed the "drop shadow" issue a while back......... I didn't get many takers.
but this looks great.... really.
might be worth slimming up the red bit just a little....... but I think this thing is spot on.

My version?
That's just a screen cap of the current layout with some gradients and simpler bands of colour thrown over the top. I can't really take credit for that. The design had a lot of strength to start with, I just thought that it could be made a little more cohesive.
My apologies if I'm stepping on anyone's toes or anything. That wasn't my intention.
