i have been workjing on a logo for a company for a feew weeks now. But the drive that i kept tthe file one has died. 3 days at tech support and no good news. I have lost everything.

The question is how should I approach the compay that I was making the logo for and what should I tell them?

Sorry to be late here, I should have jumped in earlier. Tell your client what happened, gather together whatever work you can save (printouts, maybe?) and re-create your work. Maybe you'll be able to bill for this time, but usually not. Eat it and move on, it's your only choice. (From their perspective, they have backup tapes, you should have backups too!)

Is the data completely gone? Have you tried having your files taken off of the HD?

Sorry for taking so long to get back to this I havn't had a chance to come to the Asylum recently.

I have a print out of the logo and I have scanned that back in and am getting to work on remaking the logo. Since I was working on a flat rate I don't have to worry about time.

Jestah the hard drive is dead and gone. It started with a FAT error that lead up to the drive just going away. Tech support has tried for three days to get it back before pronouncing it dead.

The funny part is that I had made backup copies incase something happened but they were all on the same drive. So I guess what I have learned to do is back it up onto different drives not just diffferent copies.

tj333: Sorry to hear about that (it happens to us all - hopefully only once!!). I was once told 'Data isn't backed up until it is stored in a different building' (preferrably one a long way away from the other).

I've read about data being recovered from hard drives that have been burnt or smashed with a hammer so data is rarely completely lost it just gets increasingly expensive to get it back.

This is true tj. If you hang around long enough you hear similar horror stories and recoveries. Depending on how much your getting for the logo you might want to look into taking your HD elsewhere. If its not worth the cost then I wouldn't bother, but if you can make money, it might be a good idea.

Also I should add this might be an ideal time to look into purchasing a jazz/zip drive if you don't already have one. There fairly inexpensive nowerdays and much more sturdy then a CD. I back up alot of my work on them, just in case.

Useing the Zip disks seems like a good idea. Ciurrently I only use mine for file transfers between computers only but useing it for backup would be helpful. I guess all that is left to do is get on with life and remake the logo. Thanks for the advice.
