I've got an image that I originally made just for a black background:

Is it possible to substitue the black for completely transparent, so it shows up as whatever color it's put in front of? Photoshop 6.0, no plugins.

Ok, here's my method. Open up your pic in photoshop, make a new layer below the pic and fill this layer with the color you want to put the pic over. Set the pic layer to screen. You can also duplicate the pic layer and set one to multiply and one to screen. This works if the background is not dark. Now, run some hue/sat bright/contr and curves to make the colors look perfect. Then just save with your favorite method, eliminating the excess edge background fill. Gif98a export is probably my favorite method...but there are many others.

it's impossible to make it fit over *any* color.

you need to make it anti-aliased for the color you intend to use it over.

my method:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
* make the image to indexed color, with marked transparency
* go to image

well yea...but that won't work if your pic already has a background...
