I have wondered the same thing myself...

When you use "save for web" all what is transparent will remain transparent, so that is one solutions. However, when you have a picture that is not in layers that will not work.

I have looked in the thing you get up when you choose "save for web" but I can't find anyting like there is in for instace Fireworks, where you just can pick what colours you want transparent. Surely PS 6.0 must have a feature like that, right? But where is it?

There are a couple of ways....

#1. If you still have PS 5.5 and like that method just cut and paste your export filter to PS 6.0.

#2. Use the Save for Web option. It has features for doing transparency. I usually make my background layer the color you want transparent and then hide that layer just before I hit Ctrl ALT Shift S

#3. In the Help menu there is an export wizard but IMHO it sucks.

#4. Buy some transparency film for an overhead projector. Print your logo on the film and VOILA! Transparent logo.

Any others?

If you bought your version of PS, the Gif Export filter is on the disc..it just doesn't automatically install (Don't ask me...ask the geniuses at Adobe) It's in a goodies or some such, folder just do a search for it, and install it.

....and such.

..... assuming of course that u-neek still has the disc.

It does seem stupid that the software doesn't automatically install. Adobe probably wants people to use their "save for web" feature.

well I might as well butt in here.. lmao...

I still like the long hand method... create the graphic, save it first.. flatten the image leaving just your intended background and the image above it.. (thats 2 layers mathematically speaking).... then load your image layer as a selection (CTL CLICK it).. then hop on over the the channels palette and create yourself a nice alpha mask...

next hop back to your layer palette, and now convert to Index colour (flattens image).. then off we run to the gif89a export.. select your lurvely alpha channel as your transparency mask.. and HEY PRESTO! perfection.. heh

of course its a way long way around but it werks for me!

If you are wanting to use that graphic as a transparent on this board, make your background color the average of the two colors used on this board instead of black and it will look better when posted here. If that's not the problem you're having, I don't know what to tell you.

nah, i thought that joke was crappy. my humor is far more sophisticated.
for a joke to make me laugh, it must contain the word 'bum' or 'fart' (tee hee).

Also. PS 6 is bundeled with ImageReady, which has a transparency/ optimize /save thingy...
Hop over to IR ( bottom button on the tool bar ) the active image in PS loads as default, in the image window, click *optimize* or *2up* and on the Optimize pallette, select gif from the pull down, adjust # of colors, matte, etc to taste. Voila ! Optimzed and ready to go.

hey uneek, I'll pass on some advice bunchapixels gave me.

Just put the image on a background with the following RGB values: 64, 4, 4

The export using Gif98a, and using the eyedropper tool, select as much of the brown background as you can so that most of the image shows through. Don't worry about a few pixels on the edges, your graphic is small enough that it won't be noticable.

Hm what the...

The method I've used since I got PS6 was to have a distinct one-shade background colour, flatten, and convert to indexed colour with transparency checked, and then go image>mode>colour table. From there, there's a button that allows you to select a colour for the transparency, and then you just save as .GIF

That's about how I made my sig, after taking the .BMP produced by Rhino.

Ok here's what I did in P6 to get a transparent gif....

1. File/Save for web
2. Select GIF
3. Check Transparency
4. Click the down arrow next to Matte & choose 'Other'
5. Insert your r,g,b colors for your bkgd (for the Doc's Asylum use 64,4,4)
6. Hit OK
