Dracusis 3 digit numbers gave me this thought...

Me for one lived (with Photoshop in my computer) for over 6 months not saving anything in PSD, as I didn't know what it was...

Here is what I wished I'd knew from the start:
1: Save everything in PSD.
2: Learn quickly how to work with layers.
3: Enter the Tutorials, and try many times even if you don't get the first time.

I missed months not knowing this!

Huh? What did I do!!!

I didn't do nothin I tell ya Nothin!!!

Cept, ask where the bathroom is, Still haven't gotten a straight answer on that one????

Rules:

1) Try
2) Try again
3) Try yet again

If all fails, Post here

But seriously, getting people to explore every single aspect of the programs they own will help alot!
I mean, If you pay stupid ammounts of money for a program like Photoshop, then you'll want to know how to use it, and get you money's worth yes?

Mabey we should get someone at the Guru's Network to write a roadmap as such to photoshop. Explaining all of the basics and fundamentals an in intersting and fun kina way, with lots of yummie eye candy for the newbies to aspire towards.

as much as layers, learn to use channels and masks. As I start to try and do more those are the two things I seem to run into almost all the time. Wish I had learned them much earlier. Hell, I wish I really knew them now.

Yo Dracusis - all along I thought your room WAS the bathroom!!

ooops ~sorry~

Good luck getting someone from GN to write the tutorial you suggest. I'm tellin' you, the boundaries between basic, intermediate and advanced are so vague and fluid it's impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins. Plus, with the possible exception of DL, none of us GN types really knows how to write "in intersting and fun kina way"

I'm telling you, I use Photoshop at work nearly every day, and three quarters of what I do I consider basic skills. But there are SO MANY basic skills required to be proficient in PS I'd hardly know where to begin.

And flameHorse: believe me, the months you lost will be a mere drop in the bucket compared to the years you have ahead of you. And if you learned something from it, it's surely not lost time.

Steve's right.

I think most people learn differently and the learning curve is a bit lopsided sometimes. You can be really good at using curves, but have no idea how the displacement map works. Hell, you might be a photoshop master genius and not even know about the existence of the gaussian blur filter ( I know, this is stretching it ).

I like it the way it is. Each tut is on a specific subject so you can get to exactly what you need.

1. Learn some special and unique swearwords to use when needed
2. Get one of those polarizing screen filters so when you smack the screen, it don't break
3. Never, ever, miss an opportunity to congratulate yourself on a job well done.

1. RTFM (and continue with online discussions and tutorials)
2. Make mistakes - lots of them. They are the impetus of creativity.
3. This is really the first law of computer operation in general, but be organized. Use intelligent, clear filenames and directory structures, etc.

Tutorials are great but the trick is learning to adapt wht you learn in the tutorials to your own designs.

As ~vp~ said

patience, practice, and perserverance,

Whilst broaching the tutorial subject, when you feel that you've got it together on something like Steves displace tut, try writing it yourself, in your own way (complete with graphics).....

1. Surprising just how much you really don't know when it comes to putting it into practice

&

2. Surprising just how much more you learn from having done so

Nice sig Meta....
