Threep questions the point of his thread, then concludes "bugger it, it'll pass some time!"

"ok guys", he starts, wishing he could've started with a slightly more intellectual introduction,
"i would love to hear your opinions.
Anyone who has had anything to do with art will know of artworks in almost any medium that have that title: 'untitled'."
confusing even himself, he attempts to reiterate,
"well, actually, that's one thing im never sure of - do they have no title, or is their title 'untitled'?"
not really giving a shit, he continues, "...but i digress. what i really want to know is your opinion of this practice - is it just lazy, or is it effective? does it mean that the artist simply scribbled on a page, and as it meant so little to him, he didnt even bother naming it, or did the artist just want people to makeup their own title for the work, feeling their own emotions and coming to their own conclusions?"
deciding its time to go and do somethign constructive, threep posts, and attempts to pull himself away from the computer.

Would you like to save 'untitled.doc'?

I think it's probably the latter in most cases... most.

lol... nifty thread.

Hey Slime, that's not quite the same... hehe...
Take paintings for example...
(mind you, I am not an expert of the ways of painters... I'm not all that well informed on it)
But when you don't title a document on your computer... it defaults to the name 'untitled'. It is given that name.

Now, say you take a artists in whichever century you choose...
How often do you see the title of the piece ... on the piece.

Starry Night... doesn't say... 'Starry Night' across the top. Someone had to be told what the name was.
So if the artist has yet to show a lot of people his work... the paintings only have a name that the artist knows.
Then the artist dies...
Somebody else comes running along to make a buck.... "hey look... I have 5 untitled pieces by Homer".

Now, you take some artists, like Bacon... and it's not going to surprise you that he has titled some of his work. He may leave something untitled intentionally for the shear fact that he did not care. And that could go for pretty much any artist... ya know..?

---- argg.... got sidetracked by RL... perhaps I'll get my thoughts back in a bit and finish this post----

If I had a nickel for every Untitled-1.psd on my harddrive...

Then again, I once played an AD&D character named That Dwarf, or just Dwarf for short. I once had a rogue that made it to 6th level before *anybody* asked him his name (pc or npc).

Hmm... Does a given work of art warrant a title? Hmm...

whats in a name? are you viewing it for the image or for the title?.. do you need a title to make the image complete?. I think not... ~Vp~

Bacon rules.

I spent hours staring at 'Study After Velazquez's Potrait of Pope Innocent X' (the real painting, guys) in the Des Moines Art Center as a youth. God, it's powerful. No reproduction I've ever seen can do it justice. Here's one anyway.
