i recently came across the following in "The Fifth Elephent", by Terry Pratchett:

quote:
Sam Vimes could parallel process. Most husbands can. They learn to follow their own line of thought while at the same time listening to what their wives say. And the listening is important, because at any time they could be challenged and must be ready to quote the last sentence in full. A vital additional skill is being able to scan the dialogue for telltale phrases such as "and they can deliver it tomorrow" or "so I've invited them for dinner?" or "they can do it in blur, really quite cheaply."

Now, it got me thinking because I can do the same thing with my girlfriend. I can also queue and review my thought processes, which annoys her to no end. She'll ask a question, I'll instincitively say what, and then the conversation will rewind in my mind and I'll answer her before she repeats herself.

Anyone else have these experiences?

oh yes. I know what you mean... when me and my sock puppet speak to each other... even if I'm not fully listening to him... I know what he says..

i think parallel processing is a must for all mothers.. how else could they do all the things they do and keep up with children going through their 'baby stage: age of discovery' phase which parallels learning to crawl, walk, run, climb, open cupboards/doors and drawers, and talk too..

I can half listen to Wella and "get by". I don't like doing it though because my personality is much more geared to devoting most of my attention to one thing at a time. And of course it is a much richer exchange if both of us are paying attention to one another.

But after being with one person for 14 years there are definitely situations like you describe.

That happens to me a lot. But mostly when it is unimportant or too important.

First, would be school. The teacher explains us something in math and in my mind the number are running around, jumping over each other, making fun at each other (i think the 4 looks very weird! *g*) and they get colored, too! *Time for my medications*

Or the last eclipse! I was watching it and suddenly thinking how to make the same effect in dhtml. Using a black circle going over yellow one, covering it and when it is completley covered the yellow image changes to a bigger one showing the sun's corona
blablabla...

And a last example, which ticks off my girlfriend, is whenever I look in her eyes. They are kinds blue with a dark starburs effect AND light blue waves effect. They make me drown
And then comes the: "Repeat my last sentence!"-thing.
What works is "I love you!" but, maybe after 14 years it might get old.

On the other hand I can get so concentrated that I forget everthing around me. And people shout my name twice until I react and look up from the book, my homework, the screen or whatever. *It's time again for my medication...*

I've tried to concentrate on more than one thing, like listening + watching TV, or posting on The Fora (that's a site) and listening to music.

But I just can't do it. One of the two always has to bite the dust.

Yeah silence, I can do that too!
like I'll be thinking about something, and then someone will come up and ask me a question out of nowhere. Then I'll be like 'what?', all the while thinking about his question the suddenly answer. Its awesome. However, I am doing pretty good about no saying 'what'. I dont like that. If I heard the person, there is no need for me to ask 'what?'

Dug up this old link from totse:

Sometimes I can do 2 or 3 things at once. Sometimes I can't.

I do have rather excellant aural recall. I can rewind and play sound bites from long gone conversations in my head as needed.

Someone once told me that every single occurrence in your entire life is recorded in the brain. It is just a matter of accessing that information. I don't know if that is true but I would not be surprised if it were.

Having all the information, and being able to access it...it would make learning SO much easier.

We wouldn't really require computers or other calculating devices either. If you could simply store each number perfectly and indefinitely, you would be able to just sit on a chair and calculate.
