Well looks like we needed to start a new thread (again)

Current question?

Q: Who was (allegedly) saved by their 'taint'?

ok... i didn't use a search engine... well i guess it is... but it's an old *manual search engine* ... my OED... the 2 volume sucker that you need a magnifying glass to see what's on the page!

So with this definition... "The conviction of a jury for having given a false verdict"

I have to go with OJ.

But like you say Emps... this could apply to more than one person.

If I happen to be correct... I pass on posting the next question... unless of course I come up with something really obscure within the next 5 minutes....

NoJive: Nice reasoning but wrong. It is "their 'taint'" so it is the 'taint' of the person and it is written as 'taint' to try to indicate its more of a slang term (which should get it for you).

More clues if required (I seem to have stiffled the game somewhat!!).

Just to give an idea just how my mind works, here's some of the scenarios I've been looking for:

1) A woman that was not attacked by a wild animal such as a bear or wolf pack because it was her time of the month.
2) Nazi war criminal who knew far too much about techonology we needed to be hanged.
3) An Egyptian king or queen who's mummy was saved somehow by their feces.

Am I wierd or what?

Bugimus: Not weird at all in fact those are kind of the right lines to be going down. You still haven't found out what a 'taint' is (clue its a slang term for part of the body and it doesn't come from the same root as tainted).

Hmmm I appear to be killing the Pop Quiz!!

OK. Clues to the person:

He is a real person, notorious in the first half of the last century who (if you believed in such things) embodied evil and yet wasn't a politician.

Going on the " embodied evil and yet wasn't a politician" and "lived in the first half a the last century" I'm going to have to go with Alister Crowley.

Good reasoning. I've always felt that the Beast was more of a charlatan and showman than genuinely evil but who knows? Anyway its good but not right.

He was an American who wrote 'one of the sickest letters ever' (according to a book I have).

Might you be looking for Albert Fish, a serial killer who was billed as the model for the Hannibal Lector character? All of your clues fit, Emp, except I don't quite get how the original question relates. The article I read said something about him sticking needles ... um ... where he really shouldn't be sticking them, but how did this save him?

Article is at www.crimelibrary.com/fish/fish/fishmain.htm (note: this is NOT for the faint of heart!!)

All right folks, try this one on for size:
What invention, which is in common use today, was declared the cause of The American Earthquake in 1755 ... especially in Boston, which was the worst hit by the earthquake? And what famous American was the inventor?

Beekay of course is right. He was an evil sado-masochist who killed and eat a little girl and then wrote her mother a letter discussing it (although thankfully she was illiterate). The bit about him being (allegedly) saved by his 'taint' refers to a common urban legend that he stuck some many needles into his perineum that he shorted out the electric chair (although they got him second time around). Although it is true about the needles (I have a picture of his pelvic X-ray in a book) and his dying on the electric chair the bit about it shorting out is untrue although tends to be mentioned in around half (perhaps and exagerration) the things I've seen about him online. See:
www.madammurder.com/article1009.html
http://serialmurderwithmatt.8m.com/Profile_Archive/AFish_Profile.htm

and ironically they report it as fact at theelectricchair.com: www.theelectricchair.com/inmates/fish.htm

What books do I read? It varies (a lot) the information above largely came from the Dictionary of Slang and the A to Z of Serial Killers. I suppose Fish's crimes really stuck in my mind - chilling.
