I?ve always had a goatee and thought I?d always look good with a beard.
After recent financial trouble in my life I decided to go without a shave, much to the disgust of my very close friends and family. After being ridicule for several days ?Because of how rough I look? (apparently), I don?t know weather I should have a shave or not? Or maybe I?m just to stingy to buy some razors?

When I spent a month in Africa two years ago I decided to stop shaving, and I also started growing my hair long. Then I came back to Korea and everyone started calling me Jesus, which kind of aggravated me. So now I tie my hair back and I've reduced the full-fledged beard to a goatee. People still occasionally call me Jesus, but I just heal them and then walk away.

So what's the moral here? Do what you want to do. If you've always wanted to grow a beard, I say go for it. It's your face, isn't it?

[Edit] Oh, by the way, it's always rough when you start growing the beard. No one looks good with a face full of mangled stubble. You just have to tough it out until it grows in.

Go with the beard. Men should have beards. Those that shave their facial hair are only emasculating themselves. This is probably because all women are lesbians at heart.

Two things here...

Ogie: I have a strict policy of shaving once a month that works well for me. It's the best of both worlds. Most of the time you look like an unkept freak, and three days a month you look twelve. Win win baby.

Well, well. It seems we have the opposite ends of the spectrum here (St. Seneca and Bugimus). I don't think I'm that extreme, but obviously I'm leaning toward the facial-hair-as-male-birthright party. I only shaved off the sides so people would stop begging me to heal them and forgive their sins.

I just realized that Bugimus said body and facial hair. Are you a swimmer, by any chance, Bugimus?

DU, I suppose I did not explain myself very well.

Many men shave only because most women do not like beards. If you have a girlfriend or wife and she has never seen you with a beard, grow one. She will not like it. She may refuse to kiss you. She may hint that you look better without it. She may even shave it off in the middle of the night.

Since beards are an obvious symbol of masculinity and women do not like beards, it is logical to assume that women don't really like men. Women like sissified men. They want girls with earning power.

Interesting theory, St. Seneca. Would you say then that my wife tolerates my beard because she is not empowered? When I came back from Africa with my beard, my father-in-law said I looked much better with it. I think that may have had something to do with her acceptance as well.

I've also heard that some women like the way a beard feels on their skin. Is this just a male fantasy? Any women out there who like beards? (On their men, that is...)

Again, I said MOST women do not like male facial hair. There are always exceptions. Although I have never personally met an exception.

So does the fact that my girlfriend doesn't like my facial hair, but I only shave once a month make me insensitive?

Not in the least, DU! If your girlfriend had her way you would stay up all night cuddling and talking. Instead of watching football, you would be out shopping with her. She probably doesn't like your hairy ass either. She would probably suggest shaving it if she thought you wouldn't be offended.

In short, just because your girlfriend wants a pretty boy, girlie-man doesn't mean you have to give it to her.

Incidentally, I've been letting my goatee/beard grow, and I'm starting to look like one of those Egyptian statues with the long, stylized beards on their chins. It's actually part of an experiment to see how long I can go before my wife says something. Hmm... OK, it's also because I am just that lazy. It's been two weeks since I've trimmed the beard (although I have been shaving the sides of my face, so i can't be that lazy...).

I've thought about the women liking beards thing, and I'm pretty sure it's just a male fantasy. Like something you would read in Maxim. Or maybe not. I've never actually read Maxim, but it's a magazine for men, right? I would imagine that it would be like the male version of Cosmopolitan. Um, not that I've read that either.

OKay, next subject...

I used to have a big goatee, but they're as much or more work than shaving everyday. I never thought I'd have to spend time drying it. Hehe if women dont like hairy men I'm doomed. I think I have a bit of bigfoot in my heritage. I have more body hair than some monkys.

I say grow a beard on half you face and leave the other half clean shaven. Best of both worlds

Ogie - this is a personal thing, that depends on how YOUR face would look with facial hair, and what sort of hair your hormone factory is pumping out.
if it's teenie-boy-fluff, then the answer is NO.

other than that, post a photo or two, one bearded, one sans-hair.

*sigh* I think you all are missing the point...it's not women who 'pressure' men to shave...the modern world does not want bearded men! Why? Men with beards give an appearance of aggressiveness when compared to the same man without a beard. This has been proven. As to why this is is also easy to understand...when one cannot easily descern the facial movements during any interaction, it leads to uncertainty and misunderstanding on the emotional level (which is 80% of the conversation, or interaction). Want to test this? Just call someone on the telephone, and hold a conversation. Then meet this person face to face (of course, you need to have a beard in the first place, and this person shouldn't know what you look like). You will be able to see that the reactions are different.

Also, don't forget that the world is in a 'youth' kick...so someone with a beard does appear somewhat older than someone shaved.

And for those pissin' and moaning about women and beards...well, do you wish to have hairy women? With hairy legs, underarms, mustasches?...if so, then ignore the words above. If not...quit complaining.

Hmm... interesting. I never thought that having a beard would make me appear more aggressive. I do know for a fact that a beard makes me look older. I look like a little boy without a beard, and my wife says I look "pretty." Granted, the Korean word is used with a little more freedom than the English word, but still. If growing a beard means I'm not pretty, then I'm all for it.

As for the phone conversation thing, people are most definitely surprised when they meet me after talking to me on the phone! Actually, I kind of like phone conversations, because then people can't judge me by my appearance.

Anyway, I'm sticking by my beard.

Then I'll leave it up to you if I should shave, grow a beard, or just have my face rearranged...by force

It's a new program called Chia-Ogie
