The other day i put together this really nifty animation
using MM's Fireworks. My son, came down and looked
over my shoulder. He commented that it was a pretty
cool animation (hey, so i suck by your standards).

I explained to my son how i had created spheres
and grouped together and duplicated the frames etc.
to create the motion.

He said "great, but you could have done it much more easily in Flash"

Today, I watched him using flash. I asked him why he was using layers.
very politely he answered that he needed the layers to move characters
separately from other characters in the animation.

I asked him how many frames he anticipated using. He answered about 300.
I warned him that the file size would be pretty large and it would be a huge job
to create all those frames.

Once more, while focusing on the monitor, he patiently answered again...that Flash had ways of avoiding this problem of complexity.

I said you mean you will "tween". He looked at me in surprise. Dad, you know
about tweening?

he turned 11 this week.

My daughter is 4-1/2. Lately I've been taking to sitting her on my lap while playing with PS. She still has a long way to go, but she really enjoys Liquify.

My daughters are 10 and 5. While we don't have the resources to get them an up-to-date computer yet (they're using an old P-160 with some kid's software installed), they're already quickly learning such terms as B.S.o.D..

Great story, ShootingStar.

As Merlin lamented in the movie Excalibur, "The One God comes to drive out the many gods. The spirits of wood and stream grow silent. It's the way of things..."

For some reason, as soon as I read your post, my mind immediately heard Merlin speaking in that calming tone.

Well, my older sisters daughter is 11...and works in her class on the mars project for NASA (she's in one of those 'genius' schools...IQ over 180...got picked out of 29 other children in the state of florida). Some of the stuff she talks about kinda bursts my head...but I can still take her in chess! Don't know for how long, tho...

Children are great!

BTW - great story ShootingStar...you're getting old....

I honestly couldn't care less if his IQ was 180 or higher.

What i care about is that he is healthy, he stays healthy,
and he continues to hug me before going to bed and
that most importantly he is happy..now and for the rest
of his life.

that's all i ask.

What the hell is a layer?

Are you implying that i'm stupid, or clueless, or lame?
or all of the above?

if you are trolling, look to someone else.

when i asked him why he was using layers
i wanted to know if he knew what the hell he was doing. he did.
as for me, to be honest, i really could not care less whether
you think i know about layers or not....whether in PS or DHTML

Whether one knew about layers or not is hardly important. All that matters is that people regardless of age keep learning and improving as they go. IMHO. I grew up with some hangups because some people would give me a hard time for not knowing something that they thought I should have already known. It would have been much much better for them to have taken the time to teach me those things at that moment and encourage me to move forward from there.

Sadly, people did not teach or encourage him. And so he chose to grow up, not as a human, but... as a bug. The End.

Suho, it's not so much that your sperm are so much smarter, but they're certainly more focused on their goals! ;-)

Hmm, if Bugs grew up as a bug because people did not encourage him enough, I shudder to think of what Slime's childhood must've been like. Way to pull a comeback, bro! :-)

I think on this subject sometimes, and I wonder. My theory is that even the early Cro-Magnon peoples had brain capacities pretty much like ours (anatomically they are said to be identical to us.) I find it hard to believe that they just sat around going "ugh ugh" just because they didn't have computers and universities! Physically I don't believe we are evolving one little bit, the time span where we have enough technological changes to make any difference is just too darn small. (At worst, we might actually be devolving (is that a word?) due to the lessening of any natural selection; thanks medical science! ;-)

What advantage we *do* have is in the area of nurture (as opposed to nature.) I'll bet that those of us here who have kids are raising them with a broader range of knowledge and options available to them, and their flourishing because of this. If physically we are capable of more, I'd guess it's more because of better nutrition than our cavemen ancestors might have had.

Heh heh. I just had a mental picture of us all sitting around a fire, 25,000 years ago. We're sharpening our sticks and attching stones to them, and suddenly someone looks up and says "Ugh! Look what Slime do!" We all look at him, and look again at our pitiful little constructs, and then start tying the rocks on differently. (Bugs appears to be adding a few enhancements of his own!) I seem to realize that my club will never be as well made as his, and wander off to inspect the elastic nature of some young trees in the distance, I have a bit of an idea, hmmm...

Everything changes. Everything's the same.

Your pal, -doc-

Doc, you hit the nail right on the head--I'm supposed to be working on my friggin' thesis right now, and look where I am!

OK, I have accumulated sufficient guilt to leave and actually go do some work.

Doc, that's a very interesting line of thought. It does seem like we're where we've always been. It's just a matter of different situations and how we operate within them. I tend to agree with that.

I was just talking with a buddy of mine about this kind of thing the other day. The Star Trek universe portrays humanity on a steadily increasing level of advancement in *all* areas, morality, compassion, intelligence, etc.

I tend to think history is more of a huge sine wave that has some very serious dips in it yet to come. In the Babylon 5 universe you can see this sort of thing. There was one episode where it outlined the future of humanity all the way to the death of our sun. As part of the future there was a dreadful time of another dark age where technology and knowledge had to be protected by a very few until such time for the dark age to recede. It was modeled after the Irish monks who helped preserve Western culture during our own Middle age.

[edit]The B5 model is really more like the stock market, i.e. it's a roller coaster but with a steady upward trend.[/edit]
